America Faces An Increase In Liver Cancer Due To Hepatitis C Infections, But New Treatments On The Horizon
International conference to address challenges, successes in HCV research.
 
Dr. Lanford of SFBR(SAN ANTONIO, Texas) - It's another result of an aging baby boom population: an upsurge in cases of liver cancer and other forms of liver disease caused by years of chronic infection with a virus many people don't even realize they have.
 
Fortunately, scientists at an upcoming international conference will report that improved ways of stopping hepatitis C are on the horizon. Full Story.
Leading US Phase I Center Opens Site In Madrid, Spain
Dr. TolcherSTART Center for Cancer Care launches first integrated global network for Phase I clinical trials for anticancer therapies.

SAN ANTONIO, TX (October 3, 2008), Texas-based START Center for Cancer Care today announced the establishment of a new global cancer research network, headquartered in San Antonio, that will make possible a dedicated, round-the-clock network of START Centers dedicated to Phase I cancer clinical trials, with the single-minded objective to accelerate the implementation of new anticancer therapies from discovery. Full Story.
New Predeployment Medical Training Center Classes Look To Save Lives On Battlefield
Ft.Sam prepares medical specialistsFORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas - The newly formed Army Medical Department Center and School's Center for Predeployment Medicine at Fort Sam Houston prepares medical specialists for deployment with training that covers everything from battlefield first aid to working in combat support hospitals.  Full Story.
Loree Tamayo Appointed Assistant Administrator At Christus Santa Rosa Hospital - Westover Hills
L.Tamayo of Christus Santa RosaCHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health Care (CSRHC) recently announced that Loree Tamayo has joined the local health care system as assistant administrator at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - Westover Hills effective September 2, 2008.

 "We are excited to welcome this new and valuable addition to our Westover Hills team. Loree's experience will be extremely beneficial to the hospital, and we are confident her hard work will make a long-lasting impact on the citizens of the Westover Hills community," said Regional Vice President and Administrator of Westover Hills, Jeff Bourgeois, FACHE.  Full Story.
Red & White Ball Continues Building Legacy of Hope
Blood and TissueTexas Cord Blood Bank (TCBB) honors champions of public cord blood program.

SAN ANTONIO (October 6, 2008) - The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center Foundation hosted the 5th annual Red & White Ball on Saturday, October 4 at the Marriott Rivercenter, raising over $400,000 for the Texas Cord Blood Bank. To date, 10 hospitals have partnered to bank over 3,000 cord blood units making the Texas Cord Blood Bank a growing resource in the fight against cancer and severe blood disorders.  Full Story.
