| Banking On A Breakthrough - Innovative new tool will accelerate cancer research and the discovery of new treatments worldwide |
 SAN ANTONIO, TX -- South Texas Accelerated Research Therapeutics (START), is breaking new ground today by opening the only community-based, open access tumor bank, which, unlike most tumor banks, will make tumor tissue gifted by patients treated in south Texas available to any researcher located anywhere in the world who is actively involved in cancer research or the discovery of new therapies. START currently operates the largest Phase I program in the world for new anti-cancer agents with an estimated 365 patients on open trials. Full Story. |
| Acting Surgeon General Issues 'Call to Action to Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism' |
Acting Surgeon General Steven K. Galson, M.D., M.P.H., today issued a Call to Action to reduce the number of cases of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in the United States. Galson urged all Americans to learn about and prevent these treatable conditions. Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism affect an estimated 350,000 to 600,000 Americans each year, and the numbers are expected to increase as the U.S. population ages. Together, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism contribute to at least 100,000 deaths each year. Full Story. |
| President Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., Receives Honorary Doctoral Degree |
 UTHSCSA, San Antonio, TX - Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., president of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, was honored Sept. 10 by the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon with an honorary doctoral degree for his distinguished contributions to medicine, especially in the area of organ transplantation. In accepting the award, Dr. Cigarroa thanked Dr. Jose Antonio Gonzalez Trevino, rector of the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, for the prestigious honor. "My family has a deep and rich history from Mexico," Dr. Cigarroa said. "I am proud to say that I am a third-generation physician whose family began its legacy in medicine through education in Mexico." In addition to Dr. Cigarroa's grandfather and father, he has three brothers who are physicians. Full Story. |
