United Performing Arts Fund News
Deanna Tillisch

September kicks off the performing arts season, bringing with it the opportunity to be moved by Mahler, inspired by thought-provoking plays and even entertained by giant puppets. Your support through UPAF makes these opportunities right here in our community possible. Thank you. September is also time to sign up for some of the fantastic classes -- for youth and adults alike -- offered by many UPAF Member Groups. Why not try something new and get your own creative juices flowing?

UPAF congratulates Linda Edelstein, our chief operations officer, on her new position as the executive director of MYSO. While we are sad to see Linda go, we are grateful for the seven years she spent at UPAF in a variety of capacities and are glad her remarkable leadership skills will be put to good use at one of our Member Groups.

UPAF also bids adieu to board directors Wade Hobgood, Mark Furlong and the venerable Alex Fraser. Alex has served on the board since 2006 and was board chair in 2009-2010. We thank them all for lending their time and expertise in steering the UPAF ship and keeping it on course.

On another note, UPAF staff and leadership are busy getting ready for the 2013 Campaign and are excited to engage the community in supporting the finest arts organizations our area has to offer.

Now get out there and enjoy a show!

TICKET GIVEAWAY!

Featured Performance: Skylight Music Theatre

Avenue Q

Winner of three Tony® Awards including Best Musical and written by the composer of The Book of Mormon, Avenue Q is a hilarious adult-themed spoof of Sesame Street. Part flesh (human), part felt (puppets) and packed with heart, Avenue Q tells the story of Princeton, a recent college grad who moves into a shabby NYC apartment in the only neighborhood he can afford, all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that the residents of his building are not your ordinary neighbors. Together, Princeton and his new friends struggle to find decent jobs, stable relationships and a purpose in life, but ultimately they realize the real world isn't so bad after all.

Skylight is thrilled to be opening the season with this laugh-out-loud tale of the ups and downs of life!

Performances will run September 21 through October 14 at Broadway Theatre Center, Cabot Theatre, 158 N. Broadway.

Affiliate Group Spotlight: Milwaukee Opera Theatre
Candide

Music by Leonard Bernstein
Lyrics by Richard Wilbur, with additional lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and John Latouche
Book adapted from Voltaire by Hugh Wheeler

In one lightning-paced act, the hapless bastard cousin Candide is expelled from home, drafted into the Bulgarian army, brought before the Spanish Inquisition, swindled out of a fortune, shipwrecked on a desert isle, and separated time and again from his true love Cunegonde, who bears with remarkable dignity a variety of carnal besmirchments by almost everybody.  Through it all, Candide remembers the lesson of his dear master Dr. Pangloss: that "everything is for the best in this best of all possible worlds."

Milwaukee Opera Theatre brings "intimate opera" to a whole new level, staging this masterwork in the simplest of surroundings
- ordinary classrooms.  Seated at desks and in chairs, the audience will be surrounded on all sides by the tragicomic episodes of Voltaire's Candide.
