Are you or someone you know interested in volunteering in support of the Ride? There are plenty positions available. For more information on volunteering for the Ride, click here or send an email to Kaitlin Kropp. Sentries are especially needed for the day of the Ride north of downtown. This position is great for groups! Stationed in small groups, sentries help keep our riders safe and we need hundreds of them! Sentries direct the flow of bike traffic at their assigned intersection along the route of the ride and cheer on riders.

CAPTAINS' CORNER

Tips from 2011 Team of the Year Captain, Steve Smith of Rockwell Automation

Spring can indeed be the cruelest season in Wisconsin, with any semblance of warmth held at bay by rain/sleet...even snow...right on up until May!  For the past decade, I've marked the "UPAF equinox" in early April as the official start of the bike riding season.

It's around this time that the Rockwell Automation team moves into gear for another Ride for the Arts campaign. Thinking about bikes and remembering the beautiful routes, comradery and fun helps moderate whatever weather may be whipping around the windows.

Cheri Bengsch and Gerry Burant help coordinate the logistics between the downtown Milwaukee and Mequon campuses with about 2,000 and 1,000 employees respectively. Having done the planning for so many years, we have a pretty good system in place...and our priorities hardly ever waver.

Start with the most important thing first: Select an incentive!

By promoting an extra incentive in the registration bags, we have built a growing cadre of riders. Typically the item is "small", like a logo'd water bottle or even a disposable camera. Rockwell Automation management has also been extremely generous and supportive of the ride, offering funding to help defray the registration fees for employees and their families. Once these important internal logistics are confirmed...

We move on the second most important step: Promotion!

Between the two campuses, we utilize some of the "basics" like internal newsletters, rotating "lobby signage" and e-mails to past riders. We've also had success by promoting the ride during other Rockwell Automation sponsored UPAF events like the Spaghetti Dinner. With executives serving up pasta in mid April, we've found a receptive audience also eager to start making summer plans.

By providing updates to registered riders, including information on the number of riders, the excitement continues to build. We encourage riders to invite co-workers and additional family members, and the count will continue to slide upward.

Historically, we have offered a top prize for the leading fund raiser. There is a dedicated group of about a dozen who doggedly duke it out to earn this prize, which has ranged from a Garmin GPS device to Rockwell Automation gift certificates. It is important to emphasize that the goodies will only be awarded once the pledges have been submitted, which typically means a couple weeks after the event.

Of course, everybody likes to win a trophy so we featured the Team Trophy competition as a major goal for us this year. All of our materials prominently featured the golden cup!

By the time the ride rolls around, many of the Rockwell Automation riders are eager to hit the roads. With more than 200 riders, and start/finish times exceedingly disparate, it has been essentially impossible to organize a pre-ride or post-ride meeting spot. We encourage the riders to wear their logo'd Rockwell Automation tee shirts with pride and give a hearty shout out to co-workers they encounter.

UPAF Equinox is an exciting time of year. As a team captain, the "change of season," and effort involved, gives me many times the energy I put into it. It's one of the best parts of living in Milwaukee and contributing to the vibrant arts community.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT
UPAF thanks Allen Edmonds (sponsor of the 75-mile route) for their generosity.
In the following Q&A, read more about what their Ride sponsorship means to them (questions answered by Allen Edmonds Marketing Director Luke Gibson).

Q: How did your organization first get involved with the Ride?
A: One of Allen Edmonds key commitments is to maintain a relationship with the Milwaukee Community. We support several organizations both here, and outside the market through various corporate efforts. We first became involved with UPAF because of that commitment to supporting charity organizations, and Milwaukee's Fine and Cultural Arts Community has always been top of mind for all of us here at Allen Edmonds.

Q: Why do you choose to support the United Performing Arts Fund through the Ride?
A: UPAF is an important organization supporting the arts community here in Milwaukee. Whether it's the symphony, the theater or fine art, nearly all of our Executives (both past and present) have a background or involvement in the arts. In many ways we feel handcrafting our shoes here in Port Washington, Wisconsin in fact, an art form, and we are thrilled to support our fellow "artists" through the Ride for the Arts.

Q: Do you feel it is important for your company to stay involved in the community? If so, why?
A: One of our key commitments is supporting the Milwaukee area community. In fact since 2010 we have added over 160 jobs right here at our Port Washington manufacturing facility. But adding jobs is only just the start. This year marks our 90th Anniversary, and we are thrilled to say that we have been handcrafting shoes right here in port Wisconsin since 1922. We look forward to maintaining our commitment to this community for another 90 years and beyond through making our products here in Wisconsin, and supporting the arts community in and around the market.

Q: If your organization sends volunteers to participate, please tell us a little about what that represents to your employees.
A: Our co-workers always have a tremendous time with the UPAF Ride for the Arts. Many of our manufacturing and corporate co-workers "play a role" the day of the event, and they often refer to the ride as one of their favorite days of the summer.

Q: What's the best/most rewarding thing about supporting the Ride?
A: Every year we love watching riders make the stop at our oasis here at our Port Washington manufacturing facility. You have the opportunity to see first-hand the community coming out in support of UPAF and Milwaukee's Arts Community. It is very rewarding to see such a large turnout in support of cultural and fine arts here in Milwaukee.

Q: What's the most challenging thing about supporting the Ride?
A: We have to wait a whole year to take part again!

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE
2012 UPAF Ride for the Arts, sponsored by Miller Lite

Since 1981, the UPAF Ride for the Arts, sponsored by Miller Lite has been UPAF's annual signature fundraising event to benefit the United Performing Arts Fund and the 36 performing arts groups it supports in southeast Wisconsin. It is a critical component of UPAF's long term strategy, nurturing new donors, volunteers and audience members for the performing arts through a fun and entertaining bike event. Last year's Ride raised nearly $550,000 and included nearly 7,000 riders. Since its inception in 1981, 263,000 ride participants, thousands of volunteers and hundreds of sponsors have helped raise $7.3 million for UPAF.
