United Performing Arts Fund News
tillisch

Here at the United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF), we recognize that art is around us, everyday and everywhere. Art is a part of our lives in so many ways and so many facets. To celebrate our region's arts and artists, UPAF is pleased to announce the "Artists Among Us" project. Shelby Keefe, The Pfister Hotel's Artist in Residence, is teaming up with UPAF to create 16 paintings in 16 days. Shelby will render each of UPAF's 15 Member Groups and UPAF in her contemporary, impressionistic style.

The paintings will be unveiled at UPAF's Campaign Kickoff on April 4 at the

Harley-Davidson Museum® and auctioned off at a separate event in June. All proceeds from the paintings will help UPAF ensure high-quality performing arts in our community. We invite you to observe Shelby's creative process in action at her studio in The Pfister Hotel, from March 1 through March 16. Photos and video footage of Shelby painting the pieces will be available online at  www.thepfisterhotel.com/artist-in-residence/upaf.

Be sure to join us at our signature fundraising event, UPAF Ride for the Arts, Sponsored by Miller Lite on Sunday, June 3!  Online registration opened March 1, with early bird registration ($5 off) through April 7. New this year, the starting location will be the newly-remodeled south gate of the Summerfest grounds, and our 5-mile family-friendly route will roll through the scenic Lakeshore State Park. Meanwhile, our 25, 50 and 75-mile routes will again feature spectacular views from the top of the iconic Hoan Bridge. Also, mark your calendar for the Wheel and Sprocket Bike Expo at State Fair, which runs April 5-7. It is always a great spot to pick up new gear and register for the Ride in person.

Have a fantastic, art-filled month! (Don't forget to post your "I Heart Art" photo on UPAF's Facebook page.)

Sincerely,

Deanna Tillisch

UPAF President & CEO

Florentine Opera Company: Susannah

March 16 & 18, 2012

Uihlein Hall, Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, 929 N. Water St.

A poignant American folk opera, Susannah tells the riveting story of an innocent 19-year-old girl, branded as a sinner in a 1950s Tennessee community, bringing to light the tragic consequences of intolerance, betrayal and revenge. Maestro Joseph Mechavich, highly-praised by composer Carlisle Floyd for his masterful interpretation of the Susannah score, joins the Florentine Opera in the organization's debut production of this stirring 20th-century American classic. This enthralling opera features powerful choruses, compelling ensembles and fervent hymns. Sung in English with English lyrics projected above the stage.

Affiliate Group Spotlight: Boulevard Ensemble Studio Theatre

This Lime Tree Bower

February 21 - April 1, 2012

Boulevard Ensemble Studio Theatre, 2252 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.

Boulevard Ensemble Theatre continues its 26th season with the Midwest premiere of acclaimed Irish playwright Conor McPherson's affecting monologue play This Lime Tree Bower. McPherson intertwines a trilogy of deliciously crafted monologues that reveal the lives of three inhabitants of a small seaside Irish town. McPherson's skillful writing and rich phrasing creates a poetic portrait of the siblings' disjointed family. A palpable sense of the isolation each of them feel in their small village and their own family emerges and the result is another example of this playwright's nuance and skill. While the three speakers recount seemingly mundane events (skipping school and serving the cafe's customers) along with not-so-ordinary events (a drunken assault, a robbery gone askew, and calamitous visit of a rival professor), the total of their words and stories reveal more of a bounty for the audience than what is expected from a monologue play.

UPAF Welcomes 2012 Loaned Executive Team

Each year, UPAF relies on the generous support of five corporate partners to continue the Loaned Executive Program. This support has helped workplace giving grow dramatically over the years.  We would like to give a special thank you to the 2012 Sponsors: Johnson Controls, We Energies, Northwestern Mutual, Robert W. Baird, Rockwell Automation, United Performing Arts Fund and M&I, a part of BMO Financial Group.

We are pleased to introduce our 2012 Loaned Executive Team!

Kyle Dlabay, Rockwell Automation

Kyle Dlabay earned his master's in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2011. He spent time with UPAF last year as an intern assisting in marketing duties for the UPAF Ride for the Arts, sponsored by Miller Lite. Kyle graduated from Marquette University in 2006 and worked for Newsradio 620 WTMJ and Sportsradio 1250 WSSP as a producer, reporter and newscaster after graduation. He currently broadcasts hockey and basketball games for the Milwaukee School of Engineering and Marquette.

Ann Granitz, M&I, a part of BMO Financial Group

Ann Granitz works at M&I, a part of BMO Financial Group, in the communications department. She is a Big Sister through Big Brothers Big Sisters and for the past few years, Ann has been a Junior Achievement teacher. She is on the Emerging Leaders Council for United Way of Greater Milwaukee and is currently in the process of getting her MBA from Marquette University.

Peggy Hintz, Robert W. Baird

Peggy Hintz joined Robert W. Baird & Co. in the late 80s, spending her entire career in public finance. The majority of her time there was spent as a financial analyst, assisting municipal issuers with the preparation and review of offering documents for municipal bond transactions. As the department grew and branched out to include offices from coast to coast, she has expanded to a role as administrative manager. Peggy managed the analytical and support staff and resources in Milwaukee to ensure the best client service and execution for Baird's public finance clients. Peggy has been married to her husband Dale for 22 years and has two children: Bobby, age 18, and Emma, age 15.

Renee Johnson, We Energies

Renee Johnson is a certified internal auditor, currently an audit supervisor with We Energies, and previously with Clifton Gunderson and KPMG LLP. She graduated with an accounting degree from Carroll University in 2001. Her husband, Josh, and two children, Joslynn, age 4, and Jacob, age 1, live in Saukville.

Bob Moore, sponsored by Johnson Controls

This past July, Bob Moore marked 22 years as a broadcast journalist after earning his masters degree from The Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in 1989. As 2012 unfolds, Moore explores his next career step after a nearly 14-year run at WITI-TV, Fox 6 as a reporter and weather anchor. Since leaving Fox 6 in the summer, Moore has been busy as a loaned executive with the United Way of Greater Milwaukee and now with the United Performing Arts Fund.

Joanne Williams, sponsored by Northwestern Mutual

Joanne Williams is currently a producer for Milwaukee Public Television, creating segments for the "JOBS" program for the 2011 "Finding Work Initiative" and the weekly magazine show, "Black Nouveau." You can also see her as an occasional host of "Black Nouveau." After retiring from Fox 6 News completing 29 years of anchoring and reporting, Joanne has been teaching media to MBA students at Concordia University, speaking to college students and hosting local community events. She joined the Loaned Executive team because she loves the performing arts and wants to help them stay strong in Milwaukee. She has two teenage sons, one in college and the second looking forward to college in the fall.

Jacob Taddy, sponsored by UPAF

Jacob Taddy is a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in community and nonprofit leadership. He has experience working and volunteering with a variety of nonprofits including Next Step Ministries and development in the Dominican Republic, as well as an extensive history in music.
