United Performing Arts Fund News
This holiday season I was reminded in so many ways of how the performing arts connect us as a community - from singing Christmas carols with the MSO, learning about the joy of giving from Junie B. at First Stage, feeling the impact of mental illness through The Rep's "Next to Normal," to being swept away by the magic of "The Nutcracker." The arts enable us to express our joy, our pain and our wonder in a collective, memorable way. They bring us together to enjoy the holiday lights, the camaraderie of friends and all our city has to offer.
The arts give meaning to our lives. The desire to imagine, innovate and perform is natural - not only for children but for adults as well. There are artists among us all, and if we look closely, in ourselves, too. What about the neighbor girl who is learning the piano? The guy at the office who writes plays? The woman at church who sings so beautifully? The nephew who gets the lead in the middle school play? What artistic endeavors engage you? Is there an art form you have always wanted to try, yet simply could not find the time?
Celebrate the New Year with the arts. Maybe 2012 is when you finally schedule those guitar lessons. Or is tap-dancing more your thing? Perhaps you will send your child to First Stage Theater Academy. Or you'll experience a performance by a UPAF Member Group you have not seen before. The arts positively impact our quality of life in so many unique ways. Take it personally. Explore the arts. It is a New Year, so see what happens once you try.
Sincerely, Deanna Tillisch UPAF President |

Danceworks: The Sequel! The Sequel!
January 20-26, 2012
Danceworks Studio Theatre, 1661 Water Street
Two seasons ago DPC member and choreographer Kelly Anderson had suggested the idea of a movie themed concert, and the dancers jointly created the wildly successful concert Lights, DPC...ACTION! Many film genres were left on the proverbial cutting room floor, so DPC Artistic Director Dani Kuepper and Associate Artistic Director Kim Johnson-Rockafellow invited the company members to explore new genres and contribute their unique choreography to The Sequel! "We do not want to limit ourselves by merely copying popular movies from different genres," explained Johnson-Rockafellow. "We are committed to taking each piece and creating a work of art that could work onstage in any concert."
The colorful world of Bollywood will come to life on the Danceworks stage, courtesy of DPC dancers Melissa Anderson and Simon Eichinger. The pair has been studying Bollywood movies to learn the intricate movements. They were surprised to discover an underlying influence of American culture, sometimes even combining Indian classical dance with familiar moves from Michael Jackson's Thriller.
Eichinger, who is enjoying his second season as a company member, is taking a more prominent role as a choreographer. In addition to the Bollywood piece, he is also creating with an ensemble piece inspired by western films. Sarah Gonsiorowski, DPC's newest member, will explore the intense femme fatales from Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill 1 and 2, paying homage to renowned, quirky film director Quentin Tarentino.
Kim Johnson-Rockafellow will portray the documentary genre, based on simple gestures as a result of life-altering moments. Kelly Anderson will perform a romantic duet with former DPC dancer Steven Moses, who will rejoin DPC as a guest artist in The Sequel!. Lights, DPC...ACTION! saw the two dancers passionately entangled in a foreign film, but this time a drama will ensue, with music from Casablanca.
What movie themed concert would be complete without a little action? Artistic Director Dani Kuepper is covering all the bases in an imaginative plot where Superman loses his mojo, Harry Potter tries to help him with various spells, Darth Vader battles Superman and luckily, Kung Fu Panda saves the day.
Rounding out this vast array of filmography will be fun-filled transitional moments, featuring Holly Keskey's tribute to timeless dance moments in film, such as Tom Cruise's notorious Risky Business number in white socks and underwear.

Affiliate Group Spotlight: Sunset Playhouse
Nunsense
January 12 - February 5, 2012
This "Sister Act" will convince you once and for all that nuns have a major funny bone! The Little Sisters of Hoboken have a problem. Their convent cook has accidentally served a bunch of the sisters a tainted batch of soup, and several of the sisters have met their maker. Prayers are nice, but the surviving sisters need to raise some dough for the burials. A bake sale isn't going to do it, so the sisters put on a talent show to end all talent shows. Jokes, songs and dancing nuns add up to one of the silliest musical celebrations ever!
