Greetings!

"O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it. And fear God ; indeed, God is Accepting of repentance and Merciful." Qur'an 49:12

2011 MEMORY BANK - PART 1

Calendar flipping pages It is said that "the past helps chart the future." In that spirit, we plan to share stories of significance in Muslims' life in Southern California. The following is our first batch for the first quarter of 2011. We regret if we have missed any other major stories during this period.

January 14: Shura Council launched an online leadership and management course for non-profit and Masajid leadership.

January 26: The Islamic Center of Temecula Valley after several hearings finally won a unanimous approval to build a Masjid in the City of Temecula. Hundreds of justice advocates from all across Southern California stood in solidarity with the Muslim community in their struggle to practice their faith freely from any fear or persecution .

February 13: Muslims were subjected to hate and bigotry in Yorba Linda at a fundraiser for women's shelter organized by ICNA-Relief. While the hate rally was patronized by local elected officials (Congressmen Ed Royce, Gary Miller and Villa Park Councilwoman Deborah Pauly), it also brought together people of faith and conscience to stand firmly against hate and for justice and love.

February 19: Shura Council joined its Japanese-American friends and Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress by signing a resolution and committing to uphold civil rights and civil liberties for all Americans.

March 1: The Islamic Shura Council authored a memo in response to the controversial hearings held by Congressman Peter King. This memo was signed by 128 leading faith leaders from across Southern California to whom we are eternally grateful.

March 11: On behalf of the Muslim community, Shura Council reached out to our Japanese-American friends in response to catastrophic earthquake which triggered a tsunami in Japan.

March 19: The La Mirada Masjid  was subjected to another hate crime. This Masjid was shot at earlier in 2006 causing great fear in the community. Interfaith leaders and community members demonstrated support by holding a unity walk around the Masjid in La Mirada.

April 13: Masjid Bilal Ibn Rabah was vandalized with a brick that shattered the glass window of the Masjid.

Stay tuned for SOCAL Memory Bank - Part-II next week.
