FIGHTING FOR GROCERIES?

No Groceries

Shura Council joined local faith leaders in calling for a fair and just agreement with the Union representing grocery workers in Southern California.  What was feared three months ago is now a serious possibility, a full strike by grocery workers as a last resort. "The grocery companies must not treat their workers as just another commodity on their shelves but rather as people with names and families," said Shakeel Syed, Chairman of Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice, an organization that advocates for equity and justice for workers in Southern California.

MUSLIM-CATHOLIC DIALOGUE

Muslim Catholic Dialogue

Shura Council and US Conference of Catholic Bishops co-sponsored West Coast Muslim Catholic dialogue  focused this year on "scripture interpretation." This year's two day dialog retreat was co-presided by Bishop Carlos Sevilla of the Diocese of Yakima, Washington, and Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, past Chairman of the Shura Council. Among Muslim participants were Sayyid Mustafa Qazwini, Imam Taha Hassane and Kalim Farooki. In a recent meeting with the Executive Director of the Shura Council, the Archbishop Jose Gomez, successor to Cardinal Roger Mahoney, applauded the Muslim-Catholic dialogue as the righteous journey for both communities.
