SHURA COUNCIL OFFERS SUPPORT, CONDOLENCES
TO LOCAL JAPANESE COMMUNITY LEADERS
(ANAHEIM, March 13) On Friday March 11, the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California reached out to local leaders of the Japanese American community to offer condolences following the tragic news of a massive 8.9 earthquake that triggered a deadly tsunami.
Executive Director Shakeel Syed reached out to the leaders of Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress, and Japanese American Citizens League and expressed support and solidarity for a tragedy of colossal proportions. On behalf of the Shura Council, he also apprised of special prayers at Mosques and a fund drive by Shura Council's member organization Helping Hand.
With more than 1,300 people declared dead and tens of thousands more still unaccounted for following the tsunami, the situation is heartbreaking and requires immediate attention by all people of goodwill.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with our Japanese American brothers and sisters, who have stood by our sides time and again in moments of hardship to offer their support," said Dr. Maher Hathout, Chairman of the Shura Council. "We urge all of our member mosques and organizations to urge their communities to give generously to help alleviate the humanitarian crisis emerging as a result of the earthquake."
