The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California asked the FBI to turn over records related to the agency's collection and use of race and ethnicity data in Southern California communities under the Freedom of Information Act. FBI guidelines on domestic intelligence authorize agents to collect information about and map so-called "ethnic-oriented" businesses, behaviors, lifestyle characteristics and cultural traditions in communities with concentrated ethnic populations. "This is a clear example of 'Muslim mapping,'" said Peter Bibring of ACLU of Southern California. Similar mapping program by the Los Angeles Police Department (in 2007) was challenged by the Shura Council along with other community groups and the ACLU and was shut down.
Shura Council also joined community organizations in asking FBI to remove Robert Spencer, an infamous hatemonger from FBI's trainer list. |
