AsSalaamu Alaykum |
Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Allah we've reached our 100th newsletter! Jazak'Allah khayran for your continued support. - The Board, Staff & Volunteers of the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California. |
RAMADAN IN GEAR |
We thank Allah for giving us another Ramadan and let us pray that we take advantage of this blessed month and reconnect with our Creator and serve humanity. As each year, the Shura Council is busy working on your behalf to coordinate the Ramadan activities and also help Masajid in myriad ways, such as:
- Coordinating spiritual programs at Masajid. We will soon publish a master calendar of all activities. Please feel free to email us yours at info@shuracouncil.org.
- Coordinating food collection for the needy. If your Masjid has already signed up for this program, ask us how to promote it. And if your Masjid like to join other communities, let us know at info@shuracouncil.org. Last year Masajid donated over 10,000 pounds of food to the needy.
- On your behalf, Shura Council will do an on-air daily broadcast of Ramadan greetings each evening at Iftar time in Southern California. More details will be made available shortly but in the interim may we ask you to donate for this program. Please note Zakat funds are applicable for this program.
- Shura Council will host regional faith and civic leaders at its 10th Annual Interfaith Iftar on Sunday, Aug 22nd. If you wish to participate in this event, please call or email for details. We also encourage Masajid to also host Interfaith Iftars for friends and neighbors.
- Shura Council urges everyone to reach out to local schools, local law enforcement among other agencies and apprise them about Ramadan. Feel free to ask and we will be happy to provide you sample memos.

BEAT THE HEAT |
Los Angeles County Public Health reports hundreds of children and senior citizens die in closed cars each year. These deaths are very preventable. Fasting during hot weather in Ramadan is not impossible but merely a bit challenging. Plan and take all precautions and make your Ramadan most enjoyable.
- Wear light, loose-fitting clothing.
- Drink water or electrolyte-replacing drinks and drink often (before you feel thirsty).
- Extend help to those in your neighborhood with limited access to air conditioning and transportation. Be a resource and offer them a drive to closest cooling center.
- During peak heat hours, stay indoors, preferably in an air-conditioned area if available. Masajid and libraries offer great shelter and a peaceful environment to make the most of the day and can also help your fasting be more spiritual.
- Avoid unnecessary exertion, such as vigorous exercise during peak sun hours, especially if you are outdoors or in a non-air conditioned building.
