CATHOLIC-MUSLIM DIALOGUE

Catholic Muslim dialogueMuslim-Catholic retreats are held each year for two days in a fellowship dialogue and also to compare

sciptures and celebrate commonalities. This West Coast Catholic Muslim dialogue is co-sponsored by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Islamic Shura Council.

This year it was to revisit the miraculous story of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus and its correlative reference in the Qur'an, known as Ashab al-Kahf (the people of the Cave - Chapter 18). The West Coast Catholic Muslim dialougue was co-chaired by Bishop Carlos Sevilla of Yakima, Washington, and Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi with participants from Catholic Diocese of Orange County and Los Angeles along with Muslim representatives from ISOC, IECOC, ICSD and CAIR-LA

GAZA AND HUMANITY

Free Gaza
Israeli forces boarded and opened fire on a humanitarian flotilla carrying aid to Gaza. Reports vary, but it is believed that approximately 16 humanitarian activists were killed and between 50 - 80 activists were wounded. The international humanitarian activists and the ships carrying humanitarian aid were commandeered by Israeli military forces and taken to the Israeli port of Ashdod and are now deported.

A White House spokesperson stated that he "deeply regrets the loss of life." Is 'regret' enough or is this statement ignoring the complicity of U.S. in arming Israel and enabling its human rights abuses. In July 2008, the United States signed a contract worth $1.9 billion to transfer the latest-generation of naval combat vessels to Israel at U.S. taxpayer expense. Currently, Congress is in the process of appropriating a record $3.2 billion in military aid to Israel this budget year and just last month Congress approved more than $200 million in military aid. Click here to find out how much your city contributed to Israel and how did your representative in congress voted to give military aid to Israel.

Shura Council applauds the statement from Bishop's Commission on the Middle East of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles deploring the use of deadly force by the israeli military and calling upon Israel to immediately end the blockade of Gaza. Click here to read full statement.

We have a moral and Islamic responsibility - "to speak up and stand in solidarity with the victims of injustice." Shura Council urges you to take action today:

1. CALL --- President Obama at (202) 546-1111. Secretary Clinton at (202) 647-5291 and Ambassador Susan Rice at (212) 415-4062 and urge them to condemn this brutal attack and call for an end to Israeli seige of Gaza.

2. JOIN people of faith and conscience and stand in solidarity for justice at peace vigils across the country and learn all that needs to be learned.

3. PRAY -  for those who risked their lives for the sake of justice - those who perished and those survived and their families. Shura Council urges Masajid to dedicate Friday the 4th of June in solidarity with the people of Gaza and to uphold the struggle for justice in Palestine.
