LAPD CREEPING OUT AMERICA

LAPD badgeThe recently launched LAPD iWatch program encourages citizens to report "suspicious behavior" which many says is creeping out America. The LAPD's iWatch program is meant to prevent violence, says LAPD in their Public Service Announcement. Watch the video here & answer a poll question.

While the outgoing Chief Bratton had launched iWatch as his parting shot - the Los Angelenos will now watch the new incoming LAPD Chief Charlie Beck.

Birds flying in the sky
After more than a year of torture and imprisonment in the United Arab Emirates at the apparent behest of the United States government, Naji Hamdan, a US citizen has been released to be reunited with his family in Lebanon. Shura Council thanks ACLU-Southern California for their pro-bono representation of Naji Hamdan and recognizes the efforts of Islamic Center of Hawthorne, CAIR - Los Angeles, Muslim American Society and Amnesty International among others.

Similarly, Maher Arar and other victims of U.S. extraordinary rendition have no recourse to sue Washington for torture suffered overseas unless lawmakers first vote to allow such suits, an appellate court has ruled this week.  "If the rule of law means anything, it must mean that courts can hear the claim of an innocent man subjected to torture that violates our most basic constitutional commitments," said Georgetown law professor David Cole. Torture is immoral and you can end it today

Join people of faith and conscience on Nov 15th with the ACLU's National Security Program Director and author of Administration of Torture, Jameel Jaffer who will speak at the Shura Council sponsored program "Confronting US Sponsored Torture"

AN IMAM KILLED BY FBI

The Late Imam Luqman AbdullahIrrespective of the circumstances, Muslims say, Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajeeoon (From God we come and to Him we return). FBI announced that their agents shot and killed Imam Luqman Abdullah [Detroit] during a raid related to a criminal complaint alleging that members of the mosque were engaged in criminal activity. Muslim Alliance of North America urged the law enforcement to not demonize American Muslims in general and African American Muslims in particular. Others say Imam Luqman was assassinated. American Muslim Task Force, a national coalition of Muslim organizations called for an independent investigation and so did the National Lawyers Guild

At the funeral of late Imam Luqman, mourners called for justice and a Detroit newspaper editor urges the government to heed calls for investigation. Others wrote to condemn that is condemnable upon verification while many questions remain unanswered.
