TOP AWARD for Advanced Cooling Therapy
The Illinois Biotechnology Industry Organization (iBIO) and PROPEL have chosen UTP resident company Advanced Cooling Therapy, LLC as the winner in their annual Business Plan Competition.
The $10,000 cash prize and recognition were announced April 26 at iBIO's 2012 Industry Exposition at the University of Illinois Chicago.
"We are thrilled to receive this award," says Advanced Cooling Therapy CEO Erik Kulstad, MD, MS. "Our thanks go to PROPEL and iBIO for this honor and the opportunity to receive feedback from potential investors."
Advanced Cooling Therapy has created an innovative method for regulating patient body temperature, which is important following heart attacks and during surgery or episodes of high fever. The new approach is faster, easier, safer and less expensive than current methods. "Our device can be inserted in under a minute by anyone with standard medical training, and since it's placed into the non-sterile environment of the esophagus, infection risks are eliminated," Kulstad notes. |

Based in Carbonne, France, INNOPSYS is a world-renowned manufacturer of fluorescence microarray scanners and image analysis products that allow re search scientists to capture detailed data from genomic and protein microarrays. With a worldwide distribution network encompassing 35 countries, the company recently selected UTP as an ideal base of operations for expansion into U.S. markets.
"We see Chicago as a hotbed of growth for biotech enterprise," says Richard Pasquesi, Sales and Marketing Manager for INNOPSYS. "Locating here will enable us to build a strong network serving U.S. research, diagnostic, and industrial users." To complement its state-of-the-art microarray scanner line, the company plans to introduce a microcontact printer for use in microsystems, biotech and microfluidics research.

INNOVATION and the law
On March 8, Heather Harper of the Chicago-Kent College of Law's Entrepreneurial Law Clinic spoke to member companies and guests at our Connectiivity @ Noon series. The clinic provides counsel to business owners and founders on legal matters often faced by early-stage companies. Issues may include choice of entity and entity formation, contract drafting and review, corporate governance questions, basic trademark searches and more.
Harper discussed how new enterprises can protect trade secrets, comply with employment laws and keep organizational structures sound as their operations expand. Learn more about clinic services here. |
