Opening of New Metra Station at 35th Street

In addition to the multiple mass transit options of the CTA Red Line at the Sox 35th Station, the Green Line at 35th Bronzeville IIT, and CTA bus lines with stops on main campus, IIT and the University Technology Park is now connected by a new Metra station, "Lou" Jones/ Bronzville station at 35th street, located just east of the Dan Ran Expressway. On April 3rd 2011, just days before the Chicago White Sox kicked off their 2011 season at US Cellular field, construction of "Lou" Jones was completed, and Rock Island trains began stopping at the station. Named after Lonava S. "Lou" Jones, a state lawmaker who represented the area for 20 years and passed away in 2006, the station is Metra's first in five years and features eight-car platforms, heated platform shelters, stairways, bicycle ramps, lighting, benches and the Metra's audio and visual information systems. On weekdays, an average of 26 inbound trains and 21 outbound trains stop at the station, and it is also served by all weekend trains. The station is a viable option for employees and students who travel from the suburbs to the University and UTP.

Summer 2011

Greetings!

Greetings!

Welcome to our University Technology Park e-newsletter, designed to give you quick updates about new and growing companies within the Tech Park and to announce lectures, workshops, conferences, and networking events of interest to the Tech Park community.

We are pleased to announce that on June 2, 2011, the Incubator-South building was issued a certificate of occupancy by the City of Chicago.   The completion of Incubator-South construction marks the capstone of the University Technology Park's Phase I development, since its inception in 2006.  Supplementing the existing 5,000 square feet of Incubator-North space with an additional 28,000 square feet, the state-of-the-art Incubator includes 19 wet labs with adjacent office spaces, 9 dry labs and 6 full furnished offices, which can accommodate more than 30 technology-based, start-up companies.  The Incubator is home to six companies and the total number of UTP companies is 23.

To celebrate this major milestone, a new UTP web site will be launched in early September (using the same URL of http://www.universitytechnologypark.com/), and a formal dedication is also planned for the Fall of 2011.

In addition to the space, companies benefit from convenient access to business and product development services and university resources such as an exceptional student work force and the informal intellectual exchange and shared services with IIT's faculty and research departments.  A newly updated UTP Services Directory summarizes these resources. For more information, go to:

http://www.universitytechnologypark.com/overview/PDF/UTP_services_directory_08182011.pdf

If you have comments, questions or suggestions, drop me a line.

Sincerely,

Daniel F. Marselle

Odio Concept is a French company that is the first client of the University Technology Park's International Soft Landing Center of Chicago. Odio provides an innovative approach to designing active audio systems for residential and commercial facilities. Odio's technology relies upon a detailed understanding of vibro-acoustics (the study of how materials vibrate) combined with high capacity piezoelectric ceramics that can activate the acoustic properties of these materials. The result is the creation of high-quality sound systems out of everyday objects, such as ceiling panels, lampshades, or artwork; and out of a variety of materials, such as cardboard, plastic, and even leather. An Odio system can be fitted to existing elements or created from scratch. The company's technology requires relatively little power, making it energy efficient and water-resistant. The firm has successfully executed audio solutions for meeting rooms, cinemas, lamp manufacturers and art exhibitions in France and is now exploring the North American market. Odio was the 2009 Winner of the "Contest for Innovative Creative Technologies" sponsored by the French Ministry of Research and also garnered the Silver Medal in Innovation in the finishing and decoration category at BATIMAT 2009, a France-based gathering of the international construction industry.
