Publisher Vodcast Welcome
Dear Thought Leader,
Welcome to the October MindShare Learning Report--Canada's Premier educational technology eMagazine. As we celebrated our 6th issue last month, the word "sustainability and growth" comes to mind.
With the launch of our HP MindShare Learning 21st Century Interactive Classroom Contest and the responses to date, it's clear that there is a pent up demand for teachers to share their success stories. I truly admire educators who go the "extra mile" to create engaging classroom lesson that they share with their peers through our video contest submission. Please keep the entries coming! The first deadline is October 17th! You can qualify to win over $10,000 in classroom technology! We are honoured to be invited on CTV's Canada AM to showcase our contest and discuss interactive classroom trends.

K12: Ask a Teacher?
Nazreen Motiar-Freeman enters her 2nd year as the ECOO 2008 Conference Chair. She is an educator with the Toronto District School Board and a graduate from York University's Masters program in Education.
Q: What do educators stand to gain from attending ECOO 2008?
A: Within our educational system today, we are inundated with new curricular ideas, initiatives and an overwhelming number of educational resources, but where do we start? Many of our beginning teachers are graduating with ICT skills that still do not match those of our students. Without a ministry mandated curriculum it is up to our teachers to teach and implement a set of technology skills.

21st Century Leadership Spotlight--Reflecting on 'MindSharing' with Jerry Seinfeld--the conversation was actually about something!
Microsoft's Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld's Shoe Circus Commercial --"I imagine over the years you've mind melded your magnum jupiter brain to those other saturn ringed brains at Microsoft." Jerry Seinfeld Reflecting on 'MindSharing' with Jerry Seinfeld--the conversation was actually about something!
The recent release of the Seinfeld-Gates Microsoft commercial led me to reflect on my f2f encounter a year ago with Seinfeld which ironically occurred while on our way to graduation at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California and coincidentally after having studied Seinfeld's movie documentary, Comedian in professor Stager's class. Our "Learning Adventure" as Dr. Stager termed his assignments was to explore Seinfeld from a community of practice (COP) and knowledge sharing perspective.

Featured Web 2.0 Sites of the Month
Timothy Gard, B.Ed, M.A. has had over a decade of hands-on involvement with students and teachers in information and communication technology. He loves innovative ideas, integrating technology across the curriculum and engaging students in the ever-changing world of technology. He currently teaches media literacy and communication at Sir Adam Beck J. S. in the Toronto District School Board.
A regular feature of the MindShare Learning Report will be Web 2.0 To Go... It seems that Web 2.0 sites are popping up everywhere. I want to apply a little bit of a "filter" to this madness and provide an annotated review of 3 Web 2.0 sites that you can use in your educational setting, whatever that may be.

Technology Product Spotlight
Timothy Gard, B.Ed, M.A. Microsoft OneNote...I Can't Live Without It! I would never have thought that I would be using a product in a classroom setting as faithfully as I do Microsoft OneNote. There are several reasons for this, and not because there aren't other options, because there are, but none of the other options have the pure flexibility, power and intuitive nature as OneNote. As an educator I'm always looking for that application that will "host" most of my daily routines, plus more, from capturing quick anecdotal comments, to recording video, audio, or clippings from various web pages that I might incorporate into my lessons or collaborating with a colleague over the school network using the sharing feature built into the application. Think spreadsheet, desktop publishing, word processing, and presentation software and other third-party applications in one package. Think efficiency, cogency and productivity and organization. Think collaboration. Think OneNote. |

MindShare Musings
It was great to catch-up with my Canadians colleagues at EdNET in Boston recently--Faronics, SMART Technologies, Pronk, AutoSkill, ePals were amongst an esteemed crowd of some 500 education industry EdTech leaders who gathered to share knowledge and forge strategic alliances. Special thanks Damian Bolton and my friends at SMART Technologies for allowing us to showcase the MindShare Learning eMagazine on a SMARTboard. Luke Walker, formerly of Taking IT Global found his way to CareerCruising.com to head up their marketing efforts. Career Cruising incidentally renewed its OSAPAC deal for another three years. Doug Doherty, Canada sales manager of netTrekker was excited to share that they have surpassed 300,000 teacher reviewed resources. Nadia Santoli was hired recently by FrontRow as PR coordinator, a strategic move as she comes with impressive credentials as an alum from the Schulich School of Business at York U.
