St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School

Empowering God's children...

   To grow in faith

   To achieve academic excellence

   To become strong leaders

   To serve the community

   To protect the environment

...To be the best they can be!

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School has been serving the community of Spartanburg for 70 years. Located in the downtown area since 1941, the school provides a strong academic program in a nurturing, safe, faith-based environment. The 150 students in K-4 through 8th grade, all participate in Spanish, computer, art, music, physical education, and library classes along with their regular academic classes.

The faculty at the school are dedicated to meeting the needs of their students and the families of the students. Teachers are state certified and work to stay current with education methods, research, and performance. Parents helped to provide SmartBoards in grades 1 through 8 and teachers have received training in maximum use of technology. Each faculty member sponsors an after-school club, such as BETA Club, Art , Science and Technology, Debate, Battle of the Brains, Environment, and several others.

The Environment Club has been named the Outstanding School Environment Club in the state and the school was named the Recycle School of the Year in South Carolina. There are SmartBoards in grades 1 through 8 and laptops which can move to different grades as needed.

Recently the Catholic schools of the Diocese of Charleston were accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (AdvancEd). Teachers, staff, parents, students, and community friends worked together for a year to complete a self-study and prepare documentation for the Assessment Committee to review and evaluate. Schools were visited and many of those who worked on the self study were interviewed to determine that all standards were met. This is a qualified verification of the strength of the program offered.

The entire school family participates in regular community service efforts. These efforts have benefitted our local Soup Kitchen, Total Ministries, area nursing homes, those serving in the military, and many others. Students are taught the importance of serving others and enjoy challenging each other to accomplish more.

Patti Lanthier has been the principal at St. Paul for twelve years. The school is very much a part of her family. Seven of her siblings attended the school years ago. She serves on the City of Spartanburg Human Relations Commission and works on several Diocesan committees involving education changes.

The cornerstone of our Historic Church was laid on October 14, 1883.

The church has served us well and has a place in our hearts. However, we have long since outgrown the building 's capacity and we have been holding our services

in what used to be our gym.

Now, construction has started on the new church building which will face Main Street.

When the architect, Duncan Stroik, asked what the congregation wanted in the new church,

the overwhelming response was to see it look like the church we have, but larger.

Our Historic Church will remain and will be used for smaller services.

A committee has been formed to prepare to restore the gym.

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School supports the FISH! Philosophy!

What is the FISH! Philosophy?

The FISH! Philosophy includes four simple, interconnected practices:

Choose Your Attitude means taking responsibility for how you respond to what life throws at you. Once you are aware that your choice impacts everyone around you, you can ask yourself,

"Is my attitude helping my family, my teacher, or my classmates?

Is it helping me to be the person I want to be?"

Be There is being emotionally present for people. It's a powerful message of respect that improves communication and strengthens relationships.

Make Their Day is finding simple ways to serve or delight people in a meaningful, memorable way. It's about contributing to someone else's life, not because you want something out of it, but because that's the person you want to be.

Play taps into your natural way of being creative, enthusiastic and having fun. Play is the spirit that drives the curious mind, as in "Let's play with that idea!" It's a mindset you can bring to everything you do. Through The FISH! Philosophy, we build stronger relationships with the team members we work with, the families we serve, the students we teach and the people we love.

Our school Art Teacher, Mrs. Vivianne Carey, has sculpted a FISH! Wall for us in the school lobby. Each month the fish proudly wear the name(s) of those who have set an outstanding example.

It could be students, parents, teachers, grandparents, school friends, etc. FISH!

People are named in the monthly newsletter.
