Chapman Cultural Center Announces 2010-11 CenterStage Series Line-upChapman Cultural Center's 2010-11 CenterStage season will include seven shows of international acclaim, including Chinese acrobats and Second City improv theatre. G.R.I.T.S. Girls Raised In The South This musical comedy has its roots in the 2006 best-selling book of the same name by author Deborah Ford. It is a celebration of southern womanhood, often as sweet as ice tea but always with a twist of lemon. In the show, there are four southern gals, each representing a different aspect of what it means to be a daughter of the Confederacy. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll tap your toe. And if you a lady of Southern heritage, you definitely relate. Sponsored by Integral Solutions. Fri., Sept. 24, at 7 p.m.; Sat., Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. Tickets: $27.50. The Capitol Steps It's election season, and that means we're bringing back The Capitol Steps! As former Washington insiders, they know who's who and what's what, and they make bi-partisan fun of our politics and politicians through song, dance, and wit. Known around the world as the troupe who put the "mock in Democracy," the Capitol Steps are sure to target Washington, South Carolina and maybe even Spartanburg. Sponsored by Dixon Hughes. Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. Tickets: $32.50. The Golden Dragons These Chinese acrobats will astound you with their daring feats, twisted bodies, beauty and grace. Their routines are based on 25 centuries of Far Eastern tradition, but their use of contemporary music and innovative choreography give you breath-taking performances that are long remembered. Tickets are expected to go fast, so order early. Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. Tickets: $32.50. Dayton Contemporary Dance Company Co-sponsored by Ballet Spartanburg, this professional dance company has made its lasting mark on the world of dance by incorporating traditional African moves into its choreography. Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. Tickets: $22.50. The Second City Touring Theatre Co. This improv comedy machine out of Chicago produces the best and brightest funny people on the circuit today and yesterday. Many of the stars of stage, screen, and Saturday Night Live cut their teeth in the ranks of the Second City. Yesterday & Today When The Beatles came on the scene, Rock 'n Roll was never the same. They lead the revolution with their music. This band doesn't imitate The Beatles, but rather plays their music well in tribute to the Fab Four. Relive Rock's heyday with the music we'll never forget. April 21, at 7 p.m. Tickets: $27.50. The Glenn Miller Orchestra This world-famous orchestra returns to Spartanburg, after having sold out the house in 2009. It is the music of the 1930s and '40s that Spartanburg loves to remember. Tickets are now available online at ChapmanCulturalCenter.org and at the Chapman Center ticket office by calling 542-ARTS or visiting the ticket office Monday through Saturday, noon until 6 p.m. at 200 East Saint John Street in Spartanburg. The Spartanburg Little Theatre 2010-2011 Season"HELLO, DOLLY!" -SEPTEMBER 10-12 AND SEPTEMBER 17-19, 2010 One of America's most beloved musicals is back on the SLT stage after more than 30 years! Hired to find a mate for the incorrigible millionaire Horace Vandergelder, matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi finds the perfect match---herself! But first she must stop his impending marriage to someone else. Brimming with beautiful tunes such as "Put on Your Sunday Clothes", "Before the Parade Passes By", and "It Only Takes a Moment", this classic of stage and screen is a musical lover's dream! "PERFECT WEDDING"-NOVEMBER 5-7 AND NOVEMBER 12-14, 2010 A groom wakes up after his bachelor party the morning of his wedding and finds he's in bed with a woman he doesn't know. The chaos that ensues reaches nuclear proportions! At once a riotous bedroom farce and touching love story, this is one comedy that may have you rolling "down the aisle"! "ALWAYS...PATSY CLINE"-JANUARY 14-16 AND JANUARY 21-23, 2011 Sassy, heartfelt and a whole heck of a lot of fun, "Always...Patsy Cline" is more than just a tribute to the legendary queen of country music. Inspired by Cline's letters to her biggest fan, Texas housewife Louise Seger, this hit musical will have you laughin', cryin' and maybe even singin' along to 27 of her greatest hits. Boasting such unforgettable hits as "Crazy", "I Fall to Pieces", "Sweet Dreams" and "Walking After Midnight", "Always...Patsy Cline" will be an evening of musical memories you'll never forget. "WILLY WONKA"-MARCH 4-6 AND MARCH 11-13, 2011 Roald Dahl's timeless story of the world-famous candy man and his quest to find an heir comes to life in this musical adaptation of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," which features the songs from the classic family film, including "Pure Imagination", "The Candy Man" and "I've Got a Golden Ticket", and spectacular flying effects by Las Vegas company "Flying by Foy". "ARSENIC AND OLD LACE"-MAY 6-8 AND MAY 13-15, 2011 When the elderly Abby and Martha Brewster offer their lonely gentleman callers a glass of homemade elderberry wine, the results are always fatal-and hilarious. This hilarious farce is a classic screwball comedy that is just as funny today as the day it premiered. |

USC Upstate to Hold Auditions for "Our Town"
The Shoestring Players at the University of South
Carolina Upstate will hold open auditions
for the production of Thorton
Wilder's Our Town, a classic American play about life, love and
death in a small rural New Hampshire town, on Monday, August 23 at 7:00 p.m. in
the
Humanities and Performing Arts Center Theatre. Our Town will be performed September 30, October 1 and
October 2 at 8:00 p.m. and on October 3 at 3:00 p.m. in the theatre. Director
and theatre professor Rich Robinson says that there will be a cast of 30
required, with
ten parts for children, four of which for ages 10 and 11.
Set in Grover's
Corners, New Hampshire - a small, rural, out-of-the-way fictional town during
the years between 1901 to 1913 - Our Town
has become one of the most popularly produced plays of the twentieth century.
Awarded the Pulitzer Prize, Our Town
has echoes of Greek drama with a focus on the continuing cycle of life and
humankind's comprehension of eternity. The main
character is the stage manager, the character who narrates the play and talks
directly to the audience. This is the character who is the voice of the writer
and the character who gives the audience the background and history of Grover's
Corners. For
additional information about auditions or showtimes for Our Town, contact Rich Robinson at rrobinson@uscupstate.edu or call
(864) 503-5621.
USC Upstate Offers Theatre Oportunities
for Elementary and Middle School Students
Many area high schools have drama departments that students can take advantage of.
But younger students, those in second through eighth grades, do not have the same
opportunities to express their theatrical side as part of their school curriculum during the
academic year.
Recognizing this fact, Rich Robinson, associate professor of theatre at the University of
South Carolina Upstate, announces a new program aimed to keep aspiring young actors and actresses engaged in theatre throughout the school year. The Thursday Afternoon Acting Group (TAAG) will be held at USC Upstate's Studio Theatre in the Humanities
and Performing Arts Center from 3:45 to 5:45 p.m., starting August 26 and running
through November 18. Children ages 8 to 13 are invited to participate.
"We have seen such positive response from this age group in the university's summer
theatre camps over the years that we decided to keep the momentum going through the
school year with this new TAAG program," says Robinson.
The semester will end with two performances of a play about friendship, loyalty and
compromise called A Tree With Arms, on Saturday, November 20 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Technical rehearsal will be held November 18 from 3:45 - 5:45 p.m. A story about two boys,
their friends and their competition to build the best tree house in the neighborhood, Robinson
says he hopes to have 20 children from the TAAG participate in the production of the play.
The cost of the TAAG is $125, with a $30 deposit required at the time of sign up.
Contact Rich Robinson, at (864) 503-5621 or rrobinson@uscupstate.edu for more information.
