Reception: Thurs., Aug. 19, 5-9 p.m. Visit the Guild's Gallery at no charge... EDUCATION
USC Upstate Student Has SoloArt Exhibit At West Main Artist Co-op Christopher Adam Turner, the first student to receive the University of South Carolina Upstate Artist Fellowship for the West Main Artist Co-op Studio in Spartanburg, will exhibit his work August 15-29 from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the West Main Artist Co-op Studio. His exhibit is entitled, Current Reflections of Self and Current Work, and concludes Turner's fellowship.Turner, a native of Spartanburg, is pursuing a degree in art education at USC Upstate. This solo exhibition will showcase Turner's self-portrait series that was created while his was at the West Main Artist Co-op in addition to his other works from the last few years. A special opening will be held on Thursday, August 19 from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. "My artwork functions as a means of dialogue and I hope it sparks conversation about the viewer's own emotions and experiences," said Turner. "The experience the artist and viewers make with an artwork is priceless. There isn't another way to have that emotion evoked other than looking at a particular piece of art. Some of my art might evoke the emotion of anger within the viewer or another piece might remind the viewer of a personal experience of a trip or something else. The value of the artwork is more than a price tag to me; it's the experience that the viewer has with a piece of art." USC Upstate Visual Arts is a collaborative partner in the West Main Artist Co-op. Participation in the collaboration allows for a private studio space for a USC Upstate student or faculty member each semester/summer. The Art Studio Fellowship Project is executed in the form of a scholarship or award and includes the opportunity to earn academic credit. The West Main Artist Co-op Studio is located at 578 West Main Street. For more information, e-mail Chris Turner at turnerca@email.uscupstate.edu. Art Exhibition: History in Artifacts Wofford College Sandor Teszler Library Gallery July 25 - August 15, 2010 Open during normal operating hours The gallery is showcasing several rarely seen items illustrating the college's history. Pieces include the original architect's drawing for Main Building, a watercolor map of the campus from 1904, President James H. Carlisle's desk and chair, a bust of Patrick Henry presented to the 19th century Preston Literary Society, and the register of students during the 19th century. This last item is especially poignant since it includes notes on students who left the College and were killed in the Civil War, either in battle or from illnesss such as "Camp Fever." |
