Mal and his brother, Jones Caldwell were Spartan High graduates. They were WWII veterans. And they were business partners beginning in 1967 when they opened Southeastern Printing. For the next 20 years they ran the business until Jones passed away and Mal was ready to retire.

Mal's son, Jan, had worked in the family business since the age of 15 - part time in the summers and during college. Jan was Director of Printing Services at USC Upstate during his college years and later became the Plant Manager of Band & White - a printing company in Spartanburg (now closed).

Jan took over the family business in 1987 and at that time, there were 3 employees. Today, there are 15 employees - 3 designers, 4 pre-press and bindery workers, 5 pressmen and 3 office administrators. Toni, Jan's wife joined the company in 1996 and works in the accounting end of the business.
Erin Caldwell, granddaughter of Jones, works as a designer.

Courtney, Jan and Toni's daughter, is the office manager (above) - and her husband, Bryan King is a pressman. At times, their son, Cayden (15 months old) helps around the office - often getting ink on his hands.

Effective in February, 2010, Atchison Transportation Services, Inc.(ATS) sold "Yellow Deluxe Cab Co." to Checker Cab of Spartanburg. Yellow Deluxe was the foundation for Atchison Transportation, and the method by which Charles E. Atchison, Sr. began his own business in 1949. Although difficult to sell, from a sentimental viewpoint, the cab business in Spartanburg was not large enough to support two different companies. By combining the two, operating and overhead costs would become more feasible. Mr. Atchison decided to concentrate and devote his resources to the Charter/Tour, Airport transfer and Black Car service aspects of the business. As much as the taxi business was a fundamental part of Atchison Transportation, it was not sufficiently contributing to the growth of ATS. Mr. Atchison looks forward to the continued growth of Atchison and our ability to provide quality service to the entire Upstate and specifically the Spartanburg community.

The Chamber has been working on an initiative for the past year to create an online information resource for all of Spartanburg County aimed at introducing newcomers, potential relocators and site selectors to all of the facets of our community. We have partnered with over 50 entities in Spartanburg, including the Downtown Business Association to provide the most authentic and up-to-date information resource on many different topics of interest. The portal will in essence be the landing page or "online front door" to Spartanburg, containing general information about a number of topics of interest, such as healthcare, education, how to start a business, find a job, etc. with links to existing local sites to find out more detailed information. There will also be an extensive local business directory on the site with google mapping and hyperlinks to each company's website. Every chamber member will automatically have a basic listing on the business directory. There will also be opportunities for advertising on the web portal, via banner ads, etc. The initial advertising offerings have now been released with special introductory pricing. For information on these and any other Chamber events, contact Jessica Osborne at (864)594-5062 or email at josborne@spartanburgchamber.com.

Art Exhibition Aquilino González Barrio - "Trail of the Snail" Now through June 6, 2010 Sandor Teszler Library Gallery, Main Floor
The Library is displaying a series of digital engravings on glass , The Trail of the Snali by Spanish artist Aquilino González Barrio (Aquilino González Barri, teaches sculpture and creative arts at the Fine Arts School of the University of Salamanca). The artist describes the work in poetic terms: "The trail of the snail: Place of change/A walk through memory. Dream. Flatrock Stepping Stone. This project has several connotations of nostalgia for the land: a glance towards the past. A path: from the cultivated land to a new city which is now reborn. Flatrock in riverbed as a foundation of the past and the present which uses glass as a transparency of yesterday and tomorrow." |

American Nurses Association: Spartanburg Regional tops in nursing Medical center achieves re-designation of prestigious Magnet award, an honor earned by less than 1 percent of world's hospitals Spartanburg Regional Medical Center has some of the best bedside nurses in the country, according to the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The medical center learned that it has been re-designated as a Magnet hospital, an honor that it first earned in 2005. Less than 3 percent of hospitals around the globe achieve Magnet status, and only 1 percent maintains that honor through a rigorous reapplication process. Spartanburg Regional is and has remained South Carolina's only Magnet hospital. The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes quality patient care and nursing excellence, particularly at the bedside, providing consumers with the ultimate benchmark to measure a hospital's quality of care. Spartanburg Regional Medical Center is one of only 370 hospitals to receive Magnet Recognition.
HOSPICE CARE OF SOUTH CAROLINA ADVOCATES ON CAPITOL HILL FOR PATIENTS & FAMILIES FACING END-OF-LIFECEO Dawn Teachey asks Congress to Protect Access to Compassionate and High-Quality End-of-Life Care Dawn Teachey, CEO of Hospice Care of South Carolina and hundreds of other Hospice Advocates from across the nation recently urged Congress to protect access to compassionate and high-quality end-of-life care for all Americans. Teachey joined her fellow advocates in Washington, D.C. as part of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization's (NHPCO) Capitol Hill Day 2010. Teachey met with members of Congress to advocate the value of hospice care to patients and their families in South Carolina. During the conversation, she encouraged Congress to support efforts to stop cuts to hospice programs nationwide especially smaller programs in more rural areas. "Following health care reform and the cuts the hospice community are slated to sustain as a result of Medicare payment reform, Hill Day was a great opportunity to educate our Members of Congress about the value that we as hospice providers bring to South Carolina patients and families facing the end-of-life." Mrs. Teachey said. Over the past two years, the hospice community has been facing rate cuts on two fronts - regulatory cuts enacted in October 2009 that eliminated a key component of the Medicare hospice reimbursement known as the Budget Neutrality Adjustment Factor (BNAF) and more recently, cuts slated to be enacted in 2013 as a result of the health care reform bill passed last month. This year, they are working together to educate policy makers on how the hospice community will be impacted by the combined 14.3% reductions. "In the aftermath of health care reform, NHPCO's Capitol Hill Day 2010 was just the beginning of our efforts this year to educate Members of Congress on the hospice community's value and uniqueness as compared with other health care provider groups. Over 1.4 million patients and their families depend on compassionate end-of-life care from hospice programs in communities throughout the country," said J. Donald Schumacher, NHPCO president and CEO. "It is important that Congress know the importance of hospice to their constituents so they can take an active role in preserving compassionate end-of-life care for generations to come." For more information on Hospice Care of South Carolina, visit www.hospicecare.net. And, to learn more about NHPCO's Hospice Action Network and the hospice community's advocacy efforts nationwide, visit www.hospiceactionnetwork.org. |
