The mission of Boys & Girls Club of the Upstate is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

Photo - BoysGirlsClub 2

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Upstate serves over 1400 children each day. They operate 13 Boys & Girls Clubs in two counties. Their Clubs are open every week day during the school year from 2:30 until 6:00 pm.  Summer camps run all day for most of the summer.  Club members only pay a small annual membership fee ($5 to $10). Each week Club members participate in programs and activities that cover five core areas:  Character & Leadership, Education & Careers, Health & Life Skills, Arts, and Sports, Fitness & Recreation.

Photo - BoysGirlsClub 3

Their school-based Club is proven to change the circumstances of at-risk girls and boys.  They keep them safe and supervised in their school buildings after school during the highest risk time of day for youth mischief and youth victimization. Outcomes from their Clubs demonstrate positive impacts on academic performance, school behavior, school attendance, and graduation rates.

Photo - BoysGirlsClub 4
Their results demonstrate that regular attendance in an educationally-enhanced Boys & Girls Club during the elementary school years helps a child take advantage of their education, get along with others and like school.  These are key intermediate outcomes leading to the long-term goal they have for all children - productive, responsible, and caring citizens.  They help children BE GREAT!

  Art Walk Spartanburg
returns on

Thursday, December 17 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Visitors can begin at any point on this self-guided stroll, using the map available at every gallery.

From December through February, The Main Street Trolley will be running, sponsored by Centro Properties Group.  Two new galleries have been added to the map this month.

At Hillcrest Specialty Row, 1040 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Suite 34, Wet Paint Syndrome is presenting "Fear Not! New Guardian Paintings by Kristofer Neely," a new series of guardian angels completed on found wood at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico.  Dr. Kirk Neely, the artist's father and local author, will be signing books in the gallery, and visitors are welcome to view the growing collection of art in Kris Neely's studio.  Plenty of parking is available at this location for picking up the trolley from the east side of town.

A brand new art space is located at 578 West Main Street, where trolley riders will also find plenty of parking.  The West Main Artists Cooperative opens its doors with a sneak preview of work by their thirty-five studio artists.  A grand opening is planned for springtime, but the Art Walk is an opportunity to be introduced to this extraordinary exhibition space in the former West Main Baptist Church.

At the Chapman Cultural Center on East St. John Street, the Spartanburg Art Museum has two vibrant exhibitions.  American glass artist Duncan McClellan creates magical and intricate vessels achieved through a complex, multi-colored glass layering technique.  Internationally known artist, Wolf Kahn, one of the most important colorists working in America today, is exhibiting his oil paintings and pastels. His biography states "Kahn is an artist who embodies the synthesis of his modern abstract training with Hans Hoffman, with the palette of Matisse, Rothko's sweeping bands of color, and the atmospheric qualities of American Impressionism."  The Artists Guild Gallery exhibit is "Fusion" by Nikki Caulk.   This collection of oil paintings reflects the influence of both Eastern and Western spirituality and art along with that of contemporary digital images and photography.  An opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Crescent Gallery, 172 East Main Street, is showing a selection of work by the artists they represent.

Gallery 155, at 155 East Broad Street is open with a rotating collection of art.

At 121 West Main Street, the "Artists Among Us" project continues to grow.  Stephen Stinson's photographic portraits of important local artists are on display in this gallery which is open only on the night of each Art Walk.

Carolina Gallery, 145 West Main Street, continues the exhibition "Sylvia Spears," which will open on December 10.  Through the use of bold color or perspective, Spears captures the movement and energy in her subject matter, which includes interiors, figures and landscapes.

MYST, 154 West Main St., sister gallery to Carolina Gallery, continues the Suzanne Zoole exhibition.  Her interiors, landscapes and figures are richly layered in a style she calls "abstracted realism."

Linville Gallery at Tynecastle, near Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina is filling the space at 151 West Main Street with their collection of works by acknowledged masters and emerging artists.

The Showroom at HUB-BUB, 149 S. Daniel Morgan Avenue, is exhibiting art by the Colors program.

Art Walk Spartanburg returns every third Thursday of the month with all venues free and open to the public.

Please thoughtfully consider joining us for Boys & Girls Club Week
in Downtown Spartanburg December 5th - 12th 2009.

Together we can encourage community investment in Boys & Girls Clubs
and  local shopping this holiday season.

You can easily support Boys & Girls Clubs by honoring a blue Boys & Girls Club armband
with a 15-20% discount or equivalent December 5th - 12th. If you would like to increase your
service to the Boys & Girls Club, you may sell the armbands at your business at $5.00 each.
Armbands will be sold by our Keystone Club members at Spartanburg High School and
participating local organizations. All proceeds go to support the Keystone Club, the Boys & Girls
Club service club, at Spartanburg High School. Boys & Girls Club will advertise this event
through radio and newspaper ads.

For more information and to participate please contact Heidi Fortune at
583-4867 ext 115 or heidi@bgcusc.org.

Keystone Club is Boys & Girls Club's senior high school program designed to accomplish four main goals:

  • Connections - Continue engagement with students who attended our Boys & Girls Clubs growing up (about half our Keystoners are former Club members)
  • Career Exploration - with monthly meetings and career speakers, members learn about various careers and connect with people who can help them in the future
  • Creating Servant Leaders - Service to the community, participation in leadership positions within the Club, and experience working with and helping others
  • College Enrollment - we make sure that our seniors are 'locked and loaded' with their college plan and that sophomores and juniors are planning accordingly

Each year, the Keystone Club members who attend the monthly meetings at The Hangar, participate fully in our service projects, and actively help with our Keystone fundraising activities earn the right to attend the Keystone Club National Conference.  None of our members can afford the cost of transportation, lodging, food and registration for the conference. Fundraising by Keystone members pays for any service related expenses and helps defray the cost of taking eligible members to the conference.

Charles Lea Logo

Be an Angel for Charles Lea This Holiday Season

The Charles Lea Center offers two opportunities for individuals, families, businesses, organizations or other groups to bless our consumers during the holiday season:

Adopt-A-Home for the Holidays is a longstanding tradition spearheaded by the Charles Lea Center Foundation to insure that all Charles Lea residential consumers receive gifts of the season. Over 50 percent of the residential consumers have no family other than their Charles Lea family, and would not receive Christmas gifts were it not for the "angels" who adopt each of our 65 group homes.

Most homes have four adult clients living in them. Gift givers are encouraged to spend $35 - $50 per person on each consumer, shopping from a "wish list" provided by the consumers and staff. While all 65 homes had adopters last holiday season, some may not be able to participate this year. If you, your family, company, school, civic or church group is interested in adopting a Charles Lea home this year, please contact Cyndi Beacham in the Foundation office, (864) 562-2278, cbeacham@charleslea.org.

The Angel Tree, is another way to reach out to a Charles Lea Center consumer during the holidays. Just visit the Center at 195 Burdette Street (off Floyd Road behind Mary Black Memorial Hospital) and select a "wish" from the "Angel Tree" in the lobby. These "wishes" come from a number of live-at home consumers whose families cannot afford to purchase holiday gifts. Please stop by the Center to select a consumer to shop for, or contact Trista Bouret in Service Coordination, (864) 472-7456, tbouret@charleslea.org.

The Santaland Diaries

Thursday-Saturday, December 10th -12th  at 8pm
at The Showroom - 149 S. Daniel Morgan Ave. Downtown Spartanburg
Tickets: $10 advance/door
For Mature Audiences Only

For those who like a little spice with their Christmas sugar, this hilarious one-person play chronicles a man's experience working as an elf in Macy's Santaland. David Sedaris is a genuine American voice--witty, sardonic and unpredictable, mercilessly cutting through the Christmas spirit to point out what crazy things we do as human beings during the holidays.

NPR humorist and best-selling author David Sedaris made his comic debut reading his "Santaland Diaries" on National Public Radio's Morning Edition. Sedaris' sardonic humor and incisive social critique have since made him one of NPR's most popular and humorous commentators. He is the author of the bestsellers Barrel Fever and Holidays on Ice, as well as collections of personal essays, Naked and Me Talk Pretty One Day. Sedaris and his sister, Amy Sedaris, have written several plays which have been produced at La Mama, Lincoln Center, and The Drama Department in New York City. In 2001, David Sedaris became the third recipient of the Thurber Prize for American Humor, and was named by Time magazine as "Humorist of the Year."

Actor Jay Coffman stars as Crumpet, the wickedly funny Macy's Elf. Coffman is a fixture on the Upstate theatre circuit working both in the spotlight and behind the scenes. He has performed in many plays in the Spartanburg
area and is currently the Interim Executive Artistic Director for the Spartanburg Little Theatre. He is no stranger to the stage at The Showroom, this is an encore performance of the Santaland Diaries and Jay also performed in the role of Cupid in sold out performances of The Reindeer Monologues for two years.
"A delightfully thorny account of working as a Yuletide elf at Macy's. Priceless observations, both outrageous and subtle. Destined to hold a place in the annals of American humor writing." -New York Times

Carolina Gallery on Morgan Square in Spartanburg, SC, will present new paintings by Sylvia Spears, on view from December 10 through the end of January.

An opening reception will be held for the artist on Thursday, December 10 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.

Through the use of bold color or perspective, Sylvia Spears captures the movement and energy in her subject matter.  Whether the work portrays an inanimate object or a figure, Spears instills life on her canvases.  She states, "I tend to paint from my experiences in this world.  The world around us is fascinating and full of surprises, mystery and emotion, a world I examine through the process of painting." The result is a mystical style, showing emotion, which Spears considers a vital part of the creative process.

Spartanburg Community College Announces

Plans for Downtown Presence

Downtown Spartanburg will soon be home to another higher education institution.  Earlier this year, Spartanburg Community College announced plans for a downtown campus that will begin with a multi-million dollar renovation of the Evans Building on South Dean Street resulting in 104,000 square feet of classrooms, labs and special purpose rooms. The College is seeking both public and private sources to fund the project.

The vision for the campus features environmentally friendly LEED-certified renovations, and college officials believe that a downtown campus will provide easier access for high school seniors and adult students that live in or near downtown Spartanburg.

According to college data, approximately 1,700 students from the city of Spartanburg commute to the SCC central campus. These students would be able to take general education courses such as English, mathematics and social sciences at the downtown campus. Possible majors will include business and retail services.  The College will also work with adult learning to supply GED and remedial education to the community.

The campus will offer primarily transitional and general education courses as well as credit classes for students in the College's technology and University Transfer programs and distance learning classes. SCC's Corporate & Community Education Division will offer short-term and customized training through continuing education programs to support local businesses. The College is developing an advisory committee to assist in creating the educational and training programs offered at the downtown campus.

About Spartanburg Community College.
SCC offers more than 80 academic programs of study including associate degrees, diplomas and certificates plus University Transfer opportunities for SCC graduates to four-year universities. SCC provides flexible class scheduling including online classes through SCCOnline, FlexStart classes, evening classes and more. The College also offers non-credit classes through the SCC Corporate & Community Education Division.  For more information visit www.sccsc.edu.
