Lime Leaf Thai Cuisine Restaurant

Photo - Kanas Lam

It was strictly by chance that Tung Lam took the Spartanburg exit from I-85.  He left New York with his wife to get away from the city for a while where they owned three very successful restaurants.
He just wanted to look aground.

It was Spartanburg's good fortune that he did.

Coming down Pine Street, he spotted a vacant building in Poppy Square.  Out of curiosity, he found it affordable for what he thought would make a great location for a restaurant.  And soon it was - Sun King.
That was 15 years ago.

The economy was great and it took little time for them to sell their home and restaurants in New York and move their family
(2 sons and a daughter, Kanas) to Spartanburg.

Four years later, they opened two other restaurants -
Ichiban and Sun King at Hillcrest Mall.

Meanwhile, Kanas set up shop in the 1824 Ltd. building on East Main Street and opened her jewelry boutique, "Splash."
She created beautiful crystal pieces and soybean candles.

Three years ago, she created something else.  From an old empty building on the corner of Church and Main Streets, she created Lime Leaf Thai Cuisine - now one of downtown Spartanburg's most popular restaurants.  She had no plan and purchased every bit of the dcor before the building renovations even began.  "Everything fell into place - it was meant to be," she now says.  "From the first step in the door, to every corner of this restaurant, I want everyone to appreciate every moment here -
everything they see and taste."

Lime Leaf uses only top of the line foods, fresh seafood and offers top shelf liquors including Japanese and Thai beers and Thai wine earning them Beat Magazine's "2007 Best Restaurant Award."  And they have recently added Karaoke from 10pm to 2am on Friday nights.

Kanas is married and has two children, ages 12 and 13, and has closed her jewelry boutique as she manages Lime Leaf full time.  She says people still come into the restaurant asking her to repair a piece of jewelry.  And, she doesn't mind.  She is happy her father took the Pine Street exit long ago.  "Spartanburg was waiting for us to open this restaurant."  And so we were.

The 2009 Jazz on the Square series ends this Friday, October 30 - with a special lunch time concert on the Square.
Jazz lovers can bring their lunch and enjoy music from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm by the fountain on Morgan Square.

Carolina Breeze, a four piece ensemble from Spartanburg, will be performing at JOTS. The group's leader is Rupert Hodges, who plays guitar and saxophone. He is joined by his wife Sally on vocals and keyboard, Nate Hearn on drums, and David Porter on bass. Carolina Breeze performs light jazz and ballads.

"We like to mix in songs that people recognize and enjoy," said Hodges. "We play a little bit of everything - jazz, country ballads, beach music, Duke Ellington tunes, and songs from the 60s and 70s. We want to play something that everybody in the audience will like." Hodges said that they will have several guest performers joining them during the two-hour concert on Friday as well.

As an added "treat" for this Jazz on the Square, there will be candy for those who would like to bring out the little trick or treaters one day early.

Jazz on the Square is produced and coordinated by the City of Spartanburg's Special Events Office. It is presented by QS/1. Event goers can check the Special Events Hotline number at 864-596-3613 for updated information and any cancellations because of inclement weather.
