Joe Emkjer

Diana Emkjer has been collecting antiques for as long as she can remember including clocks that didn't work.  Her husband Joe began fixing those clocks as a hobby even though he was an engineer in the aerospace industry.

Photo - Diana Emkjer

Joe had become friends with a man from Germany and acquired from him a lifetime of knowledge about the workings of clocks. In Germany, "horology" (the study of clocks) is a highly respected job and an apprenticeship lasts four years.  In just two years, his friend taught Joe everything he knew about repairing and restoring antique clocks and gave him tools that were over 50 years old.

Photo -Treasures of Time Clocks

In 1993, Joe and Diana Emkjer opened Treasures of Time on Main Street near Abby's Grill.  They are now located in the Broadwalk Building on Broad Street.  Joe retired from his job and began repairing and restoring both old and new clocks on a full time basis. Diana handles the purchasing, sales and bookkeeping for
Treasures of Time.

Photo-Treasures of Time Clocks

Joe became certified in Horology through the National Association of Clockmakers and his workmanship is guaranteed.  They also sell antique clocks such as Tambours, Two Weight Clocks, Schoolhouse Clocks, French Clocks and even Ships Clocks.

If you have an old clock to be repaired, bring it to Joe.  If you want to buy an unusual gift, talk to Diana.  The clocks in this shop are certainly Treasures of Time.

Meditation Group
Spartanburg Community of Mindfulness
Sundays 6:30 - 7:30pm
123 Dunbar Street

Inspired by the teachings of Vietnamese Buddhist monk and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh, the Spartanburg Community of Mindfulness formed in 2009. We study and practice mindfulness and meditation in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. Through practicing together, we aspire to cultivate our ability to live deeply and compassionately every moment of daily life and to nourish these seeds in each other. Our one-hour time together on Sunday afternoons will consist of silent sitting meditation, gentle walking meditation, readings, and dharma talks and sharing. Our Sangha will be proactive in the community by taking contributions on a weekly basis and donating to a local charity at the end of each month.

JOHN NEEL
A serious student of Thich Nhat Hanh of Engaged Buddhism and a student of American meditation teacher John Kabat-Zinn, John Neel has studied the benefits and experienced the energy of the spiritual practice of meditation in the Zen Buddhist tradition.  As a meditation facilitator, John seeks to bring these many benefits into the lives of others.  Join with John in a fellowship that reaches beyond itself to help ourselves, our fellowship, and our community.

The 5th Annual Spartanburg Regional Classic
<http://www.biketownspartanburg.org/>  pro cycling race will be Friday, May 1st in downtown Spartanburg.

Each year, we do our best to find
Host Housing for the pro men's and women's racing teams.  They are a group that is generally making pennies trying to do what they love and it is standard practice for the race venues to offer them free lodging.  It's also a great chance for Spartanburg folks to give them a friendly welcome to our city.  We're glad to have them here!

The Host Housing is for that Friday night only and the racers will generally arrive fairly late in the afternoon/evening and be up and out the door early on Saturday.  All that is needed is a place to sleep and access to a bathroom.

If you are willing to help with this, please send me (by April 17th):
Your Name
Your Address
Your Phone Number and Email
# and size of beds available

The racers will be matched with a host home and will contact you directly to coordinate arrival time, directions, etc, etc.
Please forward this to anyone you know who might be willing to help.

Thanks very much!

"New Paintings by Dorothy Chapman Josey,"
solo exhibition at Carolina Gallery

  April 16 - May 9, 2009

Carolina Gallery on Spartanburg's Morgan Square

 Opening Reception, April 16, 6:30 - 9 p.m.

After growing up in Spartanburg and receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting from the University of Georgia, Dorothy Chapman Josey moved to New York City and became Deputy Art Director of cover art for Time Magazine.  Eight years later she moved back to Spartanburg to marry Julian Josey.  In the fall of 1995 after their two daughters were in nursery school, she started painting again after a 20-year hiatus.  She continued her studies at Converse College and at the New York Studio School under its dean, Graham Nickson.

Josey is both drawn to and influenced by Lucien Freud and Fairfield Porter.  She paints from life, finding inspiration in the light, both in her still life subjects and her landscapes.  She is also a respected portrait painter. While Josey's work could be described as contemporary impressionism, she eschews artists' statements. She sums up her philosophy with typical wit by stating "I'm a nicer wife and mother when I paint."

Josey has exhibited her work locally in the Burwell Gallery in the Spartanburg County Museum of Art and at Wofford College, as well as in Camden, South Carolina.  Her book cover painting for the Hub City Anthology II won a national award.

An opening reception for the exhibit, free and open to the public, will be held during Art Walk Spartanburg, April 16, 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.

Carolina Gallery is located at 145 West Main St. in Spartanburg.  For information, call 864/585-3335 or visit www.carolinagalleryart.com
