Dancing Hands Intuitive Therapeutic Massage
Kristi Herring is a Spartanburg native and began her career in nursing. She became interested in holistic health care and the many benefits of therapeutic massage. She received her massage training from the Center for Massage and Natural Health in Weaverville, NC. After working with a chiropractor for several years, she opened her business at 251 Magnolia Street until she recently moved to her current location in the Palmetto Building 1 year ago. Kristi continues her education by pursuing interest in Herbology, Hatha Yoga and Holistic Health, following a path of connection of the body, mind and spirit. Each therapy session at Dancing Hands is individualized to meet your personal needs, integrating multiple modalities including: Neuromuscular Therapy, Swedish, Deep Tissue, Reflexology, CranioSacral, Aromatherapy, Myofascial Release, Shiatsu, Energetic Healing and Visualization. Mary Black To Offer Free Diabetes Education Workshop
Employees With Diabetes Now Have More Resources Mary Black Health System will be hosting a free workshop on Dealing With Diabetes Tuesday, March 31 at 6 pm in the Mary Black Health System Conference Center, Lower Level, 1650 Skylyn Drive.
The workshop is sponsored by Merck & Co. which has developed the highly successful Journey for Control Program. This is a unique, fun-oriented, interactive approach to providing people with up to date information on managing their diabetes, planning meals and the importance of checking blood sugar. Experts will be on hand to provide guidance and answer questions. Any of your employees are welcome to attend, but space is limited. Reservations can be made by calling 1-877-532-4545. USC Upstate Presents Works Of Its First Art Education Graduating Class
The Curtis R. Harley Art Gallery at the University of South Carolina Upstate is pleased to present an exhibition by the 2009 class in the undergraduate art education program. This is the first graduating class of the art education program since it was approved by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. The exhibition entitled, "You Are What You See: Inquiries in Art Education," will be on display from April 6 to May 1. A public reception will be held on Tuesday, April 14 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., at which time announcements and presentations will be made. Also the students, who are responsible for the design and presentation for their exhibition and the accompanying activities, will give a brief introduction to their work as an artist and their vision for serving as an art educator. Visual Arts Students Display Work In Downtown Spartanburg In Exhibition Entitled "20 in 09"
Twenty college seniors from the University of South Carolina Upstate will show their works in an exhibit entitled "20 in 09" from April 7 to May 1 at 151 West Main Street in downtown Spartanburg, next to the former Abby's Grill on Morgan Square. The exhibition opens on Tuesday, April 7 at 6:30 p.m. with a public reception.
USC Upstate's Faculty Jazz Concert Members of the University of South Carolina Upstate's music faculty will host a Faculty Jazz Concert on Tuesday, March 24 at 8:00 p.m. in the Humanities and Performing Arts Center Theatre. This free concert will feature a mixture of standard jazz classics and arrangements of contemporary tunes. Faculty musicians include Dr. Gregg Akkerman on piano, Dr. Doug Scarborough on trombone, Vern Weygandt on trombone, Adam Knight on guitar, Steve Knight on guitar, and Shannon Hoover on bass. | Juried Student Art Work March 19-27, Milliken Art Gallery
The Student Art Club at Converse will present its annual Student Juried Art Show in the Milliken Art Gallery on the Converse campus March 19-27. There will be 40 pieces on display...from prints to photos, drawings and paintings, mixed media work, as well as a small portion of ceramic and sculptural works. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Milliken Art Gallery hours are 9 am-5 pm Monday through Friday. The Converse Wind Ensemble March 23, 7:30 pm, Daniel Recital Hall
The Converse Wind Ensemble, conducted by Converse faculty member Greg Lindahl, will perform in Twichell Auditorium on the Converse College campus. Lindahl has entitled the concert "Colours" and commented, "All of the individual works on the program reference various colors in their titles, and are assembled to exhibit the many different tonal colors available to composers in an ensemble setting." A powerful original production depicting empowered women survivors of domestic violence. Admission is $10 with all proceeds benefiting the Spartanburg SAFE HOMES/Rape Crisis Coalition. The production, which is made possible through funding through Converse's Creative Collaboration program, is also a partnership with USC-Upstate and Wofford College in celebration of Women's History Month. Richard Tillinghast is the author of seven books of poetry including Sleep Watch, The Knife and Other Poems, Sewanee in Ruins, Our Flag Was Still There, The Stonecutter's Hand, and Today in the Café Trieste, new and selected poems issued by Salmon Publishing in Ireland. Damaged Grandeur, a critical memoir of the poet Robert Lowell, whom he studied with at Harvard in the mid-sixties, appeared in the University of Michigan Press's Poets on Poetry series in 1995. Richard's most recent books are Six Mile Mountain, a collection of poems published in 2000 by Story Line Press and Poetry and What Is Real, a collection of literary essays published in 2004 by the University of Michigan Press. In 2008 three new books are scheduled for publication. Finding Ireland, subtitled "A poet's explorations of Irish literature and culture," is due out from the University of Notre Dame Press. The New Life, poems, will be published by Copper Beech. As a special bonus for our subscribers, violist and Petrie School of Music dean Miles Hoffman will close the season performing a recital with the virtuoso Bulgarian pianist and international prize-winner Anna Stoytcheva. One of the nation's most distinguished champions of the viola as a solo instrument, Dean Hoffman's career began with his 1979 debut recital, which the New York Times hailed as "an uplifting experience," and has continued with recitals and appearances as soloist with orchestras all across the United States. His program with Ms. Stoytcheva will include works for viola and piano by Schumann, Shostakovich, Bruch, and Brahms.

Spartanburg Historical Association Conducts Downtown Walking Tours
The Spartanburg County Historical Association has recently begun offering downtown walking tours! These tours will last approximately one hour and will begin at the Regional History Museum in the Chapman Cultural Center 200 E. St. John St.
On the tour, we will look at historic photographs that depict views of downtown Spartanburg from the spots where they were taken. Additionally, we'll hear fascinating and often humorous stories about Spartanburg and its occupants. Downtown has changed a lot since it was established in 1787, and there is no better way to see it than by standing in the places where history happened!
Tours will be canceled in the case of inclement weather. If you are concerned that a tour may be canceled, please call the Regional History Museum (596-3501) prior to the tour's start time. Custom tours for school and civic groups are also available.
Reservations are required for all tours.

Art Walk Spartanburg returns on Thursday, April 16th from 5 to 9 p.m. in a new opportunity to explore the growing number of art resources downtown. Posters and maps are at all the art venues and visitors should look for trolley signs for assistance in roaming between several exhibits.
In addition to Carolina Gallery, MYST Gallery and Crescent Gallery, there will be additional storefronts open with special art walk exhibitions.
Carolina Gallery and Crescent Gallery will be open with their ongoing exhibits of fine art by regional and national artists. Several local retail merchants are participating by extending their hours for the evening.
