Dear OHIO Parents and Families, Hall-Jones Headshot

It is with a heavy heart that I begin my note to you during our fourth week of the semester. As you may know, one of our students who lived in Washington Hall passed away Sunday night. We are saddened for his family, his friends, and our Ohio University community. We continue to be mindful of our students and their reaction to this news and would encourage your son or daughter to contact Counseling and Psychological Services 24/7 at 740-593-1616 or to take advantage of walk-in hours Monday through Thursday from 9:45am - 3:15pm and Friday from 12:45 - 3:15pm if they are in need of assistance.

Our staff, including several members of our counseling staff, responded immediately Sunday evening to Washington Hall. Vice President Ryan Lombardi and I were also on site to see how we might assist students.  Please know that we continue to work closely with the Washington Hall residents and affected students. On Monday evening we held an all hall meeting for students who wanted to come together to process what took place, and the residential housing staff is constantly checking in on the students in the hall. We have a strong sense of community and it is remarkable to see students who have only known one another for a few weeks come together to support each other in the wake of a tragedy.

When tragic instances such as this occur on campus, we will respect the family and their wishes while trying to allay fears at the same time by sharing that there is no threat to the greater community. If we had any sense that there was a greater threat, we would have immediately notified the campus and you as parents shortly thereafter. I know it must be difficult as parents to be away from campus and try to provide support. I would encourage you to keep in touch with your son or daughter and please have them contact Counseling and Psychological Services if they need to speak with a counselor.

My staff and I heard from many parents over the past few days that they were looking forward to this weekend, Parents Weekend, to come to campus and be with their son or daughter - not just to explore campus, for the entertainment or the football game - but just to be together as a family. We hope that you are able to join us for the weekend, but for those of you who can't make it, we know you are here in spirit.

Please let me know if there is anything my staff or I can do to assist you or your student.  Do not hesitate to email or call us at 740-593-1800.

Sincerely,
Ohio

Jenny Hall-Jones, Ph. D.
Dean of Students (Interim)

WeCar Car Sharing Program

Ohio University is partnering with Enterprise Rent-A-Car to offer car-sharing to students 18 and over. The program, WeCar by Enterprise, is a membership-based, automated car rental option that offers a sustainable, efficient and cost-effective transportation alternative. According to the company, the program is currently available on more than 50 college campuses across the U.S. and Canada.

With around-the-clock access to hourly, daily and overnight rentals, WeCar allows members to maintain the benefits of a personal car while paying only for the vehicle when it is being used.  Students who register with the program have access to two fuel-efficient vehicles - a Honda Civic and Ford Fiesta - which will be housed in the parking lot just outside Bird Arena, near Baker Center.

Students access the vehicle during their reserved time by using their membership card with a device located on the vehicle. Keys and a fuel card are housed in a locked compartment within the vehicle and also accessed using the membership card. Once finished, students refuel and return the car to the same location. Fuel, basic physical damage to the vehicle and state-required liability insurance are included in the standard rate plan.
