OHIO Parents and Families,

I hope this note finds you well. I am writing to you at the end of the final spring quarter. It is an exciting time of year when students are completing final exams, excited about the opportunity for summer internships or summer jobs, and the Convocation Center is being prepared for our annual commencement ceremonies. I am sure that many of you are looking forward to the next few weeks and the opportunity to have you son or daughter move home or on to new opportunities.

It is hard to believe that another year is wrapping up and soon a new incoming class of Bobcats will be arriving on campus in mid-July for orientation. We have a number of transitions taking place next year, the biggest of which will be the transition to semesters. We will move from a 10 week quarter to a 14 week semester, class times will be longer in length, meeting fewer times per week, and graduation will take place in late April/early May. The Quarters to Semesters site will show the new class times and the 2012-13 Academic Calendar will show the dates for the coming academic year.

Another transition that will take place next year is a change in role for me at Ohio University. I am excited to share that effective last Friday, June 1st I took on the role of Vice President for Student Affairs, a position formerly held by Dr. Kent Smith. We wish Dr. Smith and his family well as they move to Oklahoma where he will serve as the President of Langston University. I will begin my appointment on an interim basis, and once I complete my doctoral degree this fall, I will become the permanent Vice President. While my role at OHIO will be new, I want to assure you that the Office of the Dean of Students will continue communicating with you as I have over the past four years. As part of this transition, I have appointed Dr. Jenny Hall-Jones as the new interim Dean of Students. Jenny has served as an assistant dean in my office for the past three years, and I know you will find her to be an excellent resource in the year ahead.

We will take a break from our regular communication through the summer as we prepare for the coming academic year.  If there is anything the Dean of Students' staff or I can do to assist, please do not hesitate to email or call 740-593-1800.

Sincerely,

Ryan Lombardi
Vice President for Student Affairs, Interim

Is your student ready to move off campus?

As your student learns to plan for their new off-campus living experience, help ensure he or she has access to a healthy meal whenever needed with one of Ohio University Culinary Services' off-campus meal plans.

These meal plans are the perfect option for those that have the capacity to cook at home but may not have the time to do so or would like to continue to meet with friends at a Dining Hall. Plans can range from 15 meals per semester to 45 meals per semester and may include Flex Points for use at dining retail venues throughout campus. Options for these plans start at $231 per semester.

The most popular plan, Destination Dining provides students with $450 Flex Points for only $419 per semester, a savings of $31. These points may be used at Campus Cafés, Dining Halls, Grab 'N Go's, and Baker University Center retail outlets, including The Front Room Coffeehouse, West 82 Food Court and our Latitude 39 casual dining restaurant.

Students living off-campus are also able to purchase any of the residential meal plan options.

A Message from the Center for Student Legal Services
How Switching to Semesters Will Affect the Legal Service Fee
csls_color

As Ohio University prepares for the switch from quarters to semesters, The Center for Student Legal Services is also preparing to change the legal service fee structure to go along with the new system. Currently, the legal service fee is $8.00 per quarter, which is included as an option on the quarterly tuition bill. The $8.00 gives students access to legal advice, education and representation in Athens courts. The total yearly cost including services for summer sessions is $32.00.

Starting in the 2012-2013 school year, the fee will become $12.00 per semester and $8.00 for summer session. That's still a total of $32.00 per school year. To adjust for two semesters instead of three quarters, our fees have simply shifted but there is no overall increase.

Don't panic when you see $12.00 on your son or daughter's tuition bill and think we've raised our fee! Remember, the fee is just spread out differently over semesters. We appreciate your continued support of our program! Remember, we are here to help your student with a variety of issues, not just if they "get into trouble". We offer legal services for both criminal and civil law including housing issues, contract review and consumer problems. We offer notary services and free mediation services to all students. We can also represent students in Athens courts for misdemeanors.

Think you'll never need an attorney? You never know when your student might need some legal help, and they can't get a better deal than an attorney for $12.00!

For more information you can contact the Center for Student Legal Services at 740-594-8093.
