OHIO Parents and Families,

I hope this note finds you well. It's hard to believe that the final spring quarter is upon us.

As I did last year at this time, I want to devote a substantive portion of my message to you concerning the upcoming street "fests," which occur in off-campus, densely populated student neighborhoods in Athens. Again this year, I would ask for your help by taking time to speak to your student about their role in personal and community safety and responsibility.

We are continuing our collaborative approach with the city of Athens on the Be Smart, Be Civil, Be Safe campaign. This campaign is designed to provide helpful information and remind students that the decisions they make can have lasting, unintended consequences.

We have been able to ascertain from students the dates for the spring fests, which are not sanctioned by Ohio University. Actual "block street fests" are also not allowed under ordinances through the city of Athens, so these planned student parties are really a string of private house parties. The name of the "fest" typically indicates the street on which these house parties take place. The dates of the events are:

  • High Fest - Saturday, April 21
  • Palmer Place Fest - Friday, April 27
  • Palmer Fest - Saturday, April 28
  • Ark Fest - Saturday, May 5
  • Oak Fest - Friday, May 11
  • Mill Fest - Saturday, May 12
  • 9 Fest - Saturday, May 19 (http://www.9festohio.com/, 9 Fest takes place outside of Athens city limits on private property.)

In 2011, several street fests held in the nearby Athens city neighborhoods resulted in negative outcomes. Many Ohio University students were arrested or cited as a result of their behavior. Students have asked to be made aware of the repercussions of these actions. I wanted to share this information with you and I will share this information with students in the coming weeks.

During the 2011 spring quarter fests:

  • 300 students were referred to Community Standards and Student Responsibility (formerly University Judiciaries).
  • Of these referrals, 35 students were either suspended or chose not to come back to OHIO on their own because of the outcome of the referral.
  • 207 students were placed on disciplinary probation and will be suspended for any additional behavioral violations.

This information will be sent to all students later this quarter prior to the fests.

I appreciate your help communicating this message to your sons and daughters. Please remember to share that we all have a responsibility for upholding the standards of Ohio University and respecting the city of Athens.

As always, if there is anything my staff or I can do to assist, please do not hesitate to email or call us at 740-593-1800.

Sincerely,Ohio

Ryan Lombardi
Dean of Students

A Message from the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships
Ohio University will begin sending 2012-13 financial aid award notices to continuing students in mid-May. These notices are sent via email to students' Ohio University email accounts.

The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships will NOT be sending paper award letters to continuing students.

This email notification is the only communication that will be sent regarding 2012-13 financial aid awarding. Students are directed to visit the OHIO Student Portal at http://my.ohio.edu and select the "Accounts" tab. Students are, then, instructed to select the OHIO Student Center link to view award information and aid requirements.

For additional information about financial aid changes, feel free to visit http://www.ohio.edu/financialaid/ and select Federal Financial Aid Updates.

Note of Caution: Occasionally students will receive unsolicited information from organizations external to the University, informing them that they have been selected for a scholarship or other financial aid award.  It has been our experience that these may be financial aid scams.  We recommend that students and parents visit the Federal Trade Commission's Scholarship Scam website if they believe they have received information that may be a scam.

Type I Diabetes Group
