Winter 2012
|
|

Dear Colleagues,
I hope this finds you well rested and looking forward to the new year. It's hard to believe that the last extended winter break has passed and that next academic year we will move to the semester calendar. While the winter quarter newsletter is a summary of the past quarter's accomplishments, I am pleased to also look to the future and report on a number of additional updates and announcements.
Staffing Updates:
The Director of Residential Housing position remains vacant at this time. While the three candidates that were brought to campus last month possessed unique skills, we felt as though there was no one candidate with the desired comprehensive strengths necessary to fill this very important position. We will continue with this search over Winter Quarter and have hired The Spelman & Johnson Group to assist us in our efforts.
Sujit Chemburkar, Executive Director for Event Services and Baker University Center, was offered and has accepted the position of Director of the Marshall Student Center at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He will continue serving in his current position through February 3, 2012

Dr. Doug Franklin will begin transitioning from his role as Assistant Dean of Students for Campus Recreation to a new position of Assistant Dean of Students for Planning, Assessment and Research during the winter quarter. A national search for a new Executive Director of Campus Recreation will commence immediately. Dr. Franklin will continue to oversee Campus Recreation until the new Executive Director arrives.

Division Committees Update
| | | Development Committee
This is a newly created standing committee that worked fall quarter on recruiting members and scheduling re-occurring quarterly meetings. In addition, the committee was able to accomplish:
- Guidelines and parameters of the group
- Funds Requested Application for the funds and resources we expect to raise
- Guidelines for requesting money from the Development Funds
- Set the date for the 3rd Annual Bobcat Golf Classic - May 19th, 2012
Marketing Committee
The Marketing and Five C's Committee met only a few times this past quarter, but have continued updating the "Division Handbook." The handbook has been finalized and can be found through the Marketing website here. The Handbook is a compilation of important Division related information including the Division mission and strategic plan, organizational chart, staff expectations, policies and procedures, calendar, etc. The Marketing Committee plans to move forward with the remainder of the Marketing Plan including: marketing the 5 C's, completing a student survey and print audit, and updating the Division web pages. If you have any questions or would like to participate in an upcoming meeting, please contact either Josh Bodnar (bodnar@ohio.edu) or Chad Barnhardt (barnhard@ohio.edu). Professional Development Committee The Division of Student Affairs Professional Development Committee hosted the first Fall Quarter Conference Style Divisional this year! Traditionally the conference style divisional has been an annual event held in Winter Quarter; however this year the committee will host two, with the first having occurred this Fall. It was a successful event with 12 breakout sessions both from within and outside of the Division of Student Affairs. The Divisional was highlighted with a keynote by our newest HESA faculty member, Dr. Laura Harrison. The committee also hosted mock interview weekend for our second year College Student Personnel graduate students. We recruited 14 professional staff from both within and outside the Division of Student Affairs to conduct interviews of 17 students. The committee is now focusing on planning a second Conference Style Divisional for Winter Quarter, as well as a guest presenter for Spring! Strategic Planning Task Force The task force was created in August 2011 and members led a portion of the Division's strategic planning meeting held prior to the start of the academic quarter. The group was provided with strategic priorities including student success, engagement and support, technology integration, staff development, collaboration and national prominence. Much of the quarter was spent defining and applying the priorities to a workable format and collecting data to support the process. A study was conducted to determine what elements constituted student success for Ohio University students. A task based plan and timeline were developed and work flow graphics, including an interactive flow chart, concept map and rubrics, were developed to guide the strategic planning process. A "Dropbox" site was developed to share resources and to keep track of project related work. The first phase of the project included defining success and identifying sources, types and status of engagement and support. Included in this phase were the collection of resources and the formulation of plans to conduct a SWOT analysis of departments within the Division. Phase 1 was successfully completed during fall quarter. Wellness Committee Fall quarter was a transformative period for the Wellness Committee. We used this time to evaluate some of the committee initiatives of the past, and redefine the committee's role within the Division of Student Affairs. The committee is working to communicate a variety of opportunities for wellness within the campus and local community to allow for individual development. In the coming weeks, the committee will continue working to create new initiatives and events which will serve as a foundation for the reinvented committee. |
