Ohio Parents and Families,
I had hoped this newsletter would be my first official
correspondence to you this academic year. Unfortunately, the weather situation
last week necessitated a different initial message. We
have learned much since my last message to you about the impact of the
tornadoes on Athens County. Although we escaped damage, several areas of our community immediately
surrounding campus have been
devastated. As a result, Ohio University
students have come together to support our neighbors in Athens County through monetary
and material donations. You can find information about their efforts by visiting the Athens Relief website at http://www.ohio.edu/students/athensrelief. I am exceptionally proud to be associated
with your sons and daughters during this difficult time, and I appreciate all
of the support you have shown over the past few days about our response
efforts. On a more pleasant note, I hope you will join us for Parents Weekend
scheduled for the weekend of October 8 -10. This is a great opportunity to see your student in their environment and
get a sense of how they spend their time. I'm certain they'll even convince you take them on a supply trip to one
of our local retailers! We have a great
lineup of events planned as well. I am
excited that we are able to offer more options this year including two home
hockey games, a parent/student golf outing, on-campus overnight accommodations
in Weld House on South Green, and comedian David Koechner. Fall really is a beautiful time in Athens
with the rolling hills and the changing colors of autumn. I hope you will be able to return to campus for this
enjoyable weekend. This is one of many pieces of correspondence you will receive from me
this year. I am fully committed to
continuing my open communication with you, including both good and not-so-good
news about life on campus. Additionally,
you should receive the second COMPASS update this week from our
Communications and Marketing department. This will be sent to parents each week so that you can have a
full sense of everything that occurs on the Ohio University campus. I look forward to a wonderful year ahead, and as
always, please do not hesitate to contact any member of my staff if we can be
of assistance to you or your student.
Sincerely, Ryan Lombardi Dean of Students

How is Your Students Meal Plan Working?
| |
Now that your student has had a couple of weeks to go about
life on-campus, it may be an ideal time to check on them and ask how their meal
plan is working. Is your student constantly missing meals? Does your student
crave eating or snacking at venues other than the dining halls? If this is the
case, it may be worth looking into a Flex Meal Plan. These plans provide
students with the "flexibility" to decide where they want to eat on campus
including Baker University venues such as West 82 Food Court, The Front Room
Coffeehouse, or at any campus café. Also, this plan allows them to convert
their unused meals for groceries at the Campus Markets. If you are interested
in changing plans please visit http://bit.ly/mealchange for further instructions. If your student is already on a Flex Meal Plan, remind them
to convert their unused meals for groceries at the Campus Markets. It is best
to shop earlier in the week rather than on Saturday. In the end, Culinary and Dining Operations wants parents and
students to know of the best options for their meal plan needs. For more
information please visit www.ohio.edu/food.

| Center for Student Legal Services | | Understanding the $8/quarter waivable fee
Although the Ohio University campus affords students an opportunity to enjoy a peaceful existence, many students and their families find that legal difficulties may arise during their college years. Ohio University offers its students a valuable resource to understand the law and to prevent legal problems. The Center for Student Legal Services (CSLS) is an independent, non-profit corporation governed by a student Board of Directors. The Center has the goal of providing legal defense and education for the students at Ohio University in areas such as landlord-tenant and consumer disputes. The Center also represents students in misdemeanor cases and provides mediation services for disputes between students.
Ohio University students are given the option of receiving legal services through a waiver procedure on their tuition statements. If the $8.00 per quarter fee is waived on the tuition statement, the student will not be eligible for legal services for matters which arise during that quarter.
Ultimately the continued success of the Center for Student Legal Services is based upon the ability of students to join together to fulfill the need for reasonably priced, effective legal services. Considered one of the most comprehensive programs in the country, the Center strives to fulfill its motto of being "your best friend on campus." |
