Citizenship

Dear Parents and Families, Ryan Lombardi

I hope that you are enjoying the arrival of spring!  There are many great events scheduled throughout the quarter in which I would encourage you and your son or daughter to enjoy.

A partial list of these events includes: Moms Weekend, Student Senate Elections, Greek Week, International Week and the International Street Fair, the Black Alumni Reunion, the Leadership Awards Gala, the Spring Literary Festival, and Student Senate Beautification Day.  The culminations of our spring concludes with our annual Commencement exercises at the end of the academic year.

I also want to make you aware that there are several off-campus events that the university does not support or sponsor during spring quarter.  My office works closely with Off-Campus Living Office and both the University and local law enforcement to educate students about health, safety, and property risks associated with these "fests."  I would ask you to please have a conversation with your son or daughter about these "fests" and encourage their safe and responsible behavior throughout spring quarter.

I also want to let you know that in an effort to better serve students and parents, my staff and I have expanded our office hours on a trial basis through the remainder of spring quarter.  This quarter the office will be open from 8:00am - 8:00pm, Monday through Thursday, and 8:00am - 5:00pm on Friday through June 4.  During this time the office will be staffed by one student employee and one professional staff member.  If there is anything we can do to assist during these expanded hours, please let us know.

On a final note, I want to personally thank you for your questions, suggestions and kind words throughout the quarter.  As always, if there is anything that my office can do to assist, please do not hesitate to email or call us at deanstu@ohio.edu or 740-593-1800.

Sincerely,Ohio

Ohio Parents' Advisory Council Spring Meeting
A special "Thank you" to the members of the Ohio Parents' Advisory Council (OPAC) for a positive and productive meeting the weekend of April 16 & 17.  The 12 seat council, with members from around the country, was able to meet in Athens to discuss and offer feedback on issues related to Ohio University.  OPAC was joined by President McDavis, Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Kent J. Smith, Jr., and Dean Ryan Lombardi for sessions throughout the day.

We are especially thankful to those who traveled from as far as Long Island, New York, Washington, D.C., and Piedmont, California.  We are thankful for the commitment of all the members of OPAC!

Road Construction in Athens

Earlier this month the city of Athens began construction on a roundabout at the intersection of Richland Ave and SR 682.

Many parents, families, students and employees access campus by using the Richland Avenue/Route 682 exit off US Route 33 when coming to campus. Please be sure to allow extra time should you plan on using this exit.

For more information on this project you can view the Ohio University Outlook article here or, to view the city of Athens public service announcement, click here.

Information from Residential Housing about Summer Sessions
Adams HallThe 2010 summer housing calendar, designated building/s for summer school housing, and the housing regulations information will be on our Contracts & Assignments web site under "Summer Sessions" and will be available in mid-April. If your son or daughter plans to attend summer school and they fall under the "parietal rule" (as stated below), they will be required to reside on campus during the summer.

The parietal rule states that all undergraduate students with fewer than six quarters or four semesters prior to the beginning of the academic year in the residence halls must reside in University-owned housing and participate in a mandatory meal plan during the academic year. Students enrolled for summer school are bound by the same guidelines. Quarters/semesters earned by students while attending high school (via advanced placement, Senate Bill 140, Senior to Sophomore, etc.) will not be considered toward exemption eligibility from the housing requirements. For transfer and re-enrolling students, the number of quarters/semesters earned will be subject to certification by the Assistant Director of Residential Housing for Assignments. Students subject to the housing regulation who fail to comply with this condition of registration may have their registration denied or canceled.

Your son or daughter can complete a summer housing application, by visiting www.ohio.edu/housing and click on the 'Apply Online' button. After they authenticate with their OHIO ID and password, they can select the appropriate summer contract based on their participation. If your son or daughter is attending both sessions, they must complete a first and second summer session contract. Please note that no housing deposit is required for summer.
April Leader of the Month: Sarah Kelly
Sarah was nominated by her fellow Student Alumni Board Sarah Kelly LOM member Jessica Smith. Smith describes Kelly as a role model who "never stops trying to do bigger and better things in our community". While serving as the philanthropy chair for the Student Alumni Board Kelly organized "Bare on the Bricks" which raised 1,200 pounds of clothes to help the Haiti and Athens community. Through this event Kelly successfully raised more clothing than any other university who has done this event in the past. Her forward thinking and selfless giving has opened the door for other Ohio University students to follow in her footsteps and give back to the OU and Athens community. Leadership in its most essential form is about inspiration, something that Kelly gives to all that she comes in contact with.

Sarah's Definition of Leadership
"When I think about leadership and what it means I am immediately reminded of a quote by John Quincy Adams our 6th President... "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." Leadership to me means being dedicated to something and using passion to inspire others by your actions. Actions speak much louder than words and leadership is much more than what you say, it's what you display and what you bring out in others that makes a true leader."
Dining Services Addresses Dietary Needs on Campus
For students with dietary restrictions, Ohio University Dining Services has a variety of services aimed at making campus dining a more accommodating experience.

Dining Services works one on one with students to make every effort possible to provide them with all the information and nutrition they need to live a healthier lifestyle within the campus community. In fact, many of the meals currently served at the dining venues are made from scratch at Ohio University, which provides the flexibility and freedom of crafting special meals for students with dietary restrictions.

Some of the most common dietary restrictions include milk, nuts, eggs, seafood and shellfish allergies and all dining halls have menu items created without these allergens. To make this process easier for students, Ohio University Dining Services also lists all allergens for each food item and has made a comprehensive list of recipes for all menu items available at dining halls and at www.ohio.edu/food.

A variety of resources exist for students to communicate with Dining Services including Facebook (www.facebook.com/oudining) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/oudining) as well as traditional resources including email, phone, and in-person appointments.

As a significant contributor to the residential experience, Dining Services wants to make sure all students receive the nutrition they need while on campus. If your student has a special diet, food allergies, or other dietary restrictions, Dining Services staff includes a nutrition expert who is available to meet with students by appointment.

Call Ohio University Dining Services at 740.593.2970 for more information or to set up an appointment.
Five Misconceptions about The Center for Student Legal Services
Ohio Misconception #1. The Center for Student Legal Services is staffed by law students, not attorneys.

FACT: The Center for Student Legal Services is staffed by two licensed, experienced attorneys. Our Managing Attorney, Patrick McGee, has over 25 years of experience in law and has served the students of Ohio University for ten years. Kristine Hayes, our Staff Attorney, has over 15 years of experience in law, including time at the Columbus City Attorney's office and the Ohio State Housing Legal Clinic. She has been on our staff for two years.

Misconception #2. CSLS exists to help students who are "in trouble".

FACT: CSLS exists to provide all OU students with legal education, advice and representation. Most students who do not pay the fee say they will not need it because they don't get in trouble. Our service is very valuable to all students! We review off campus housing leases, provide mediation, notary services, contract review and many other services that can be extremely helpful to college students. We even provide assistance for debt collection issues, internet fraud/scams, car repair problems, cell phone contracts and other civil issues that may arise during a student's college career. Although CSLS limits its court representation service to misdemeanors and civil law cases in Athens County courts, our attorneys provide valuable information, advice and referrals on most legal matters.

Misconception #3. CSLS is a university department, and the $8.00 quarterly fee goes to the university.

FACT: The Center for Student Legal Services is a non-profit, independent law firm that works solely for the students of Ohio University. We are chartered by the Ohio University Trustees and have their support and approval, but we are not a university department. The $8.00 quarterly fee supports our organization entirely. The more students that pay the fee, the better our services can be for the students of Ohio University.

Misconception #4. The $8.00 quarterly fee does not cover the cost of a lawyer.

FACT: The $8.00 quarterly fee allows access to a lawyer all quarter. Students do not have to pay anything more to retain one of our attorneys. The only additional fees that may be incurred are court costs and other court fees if a student has a court case. These fees are separate from CSLS and we have no control over them.

Misconception #5. If the $8.00 fee is waived off the quarterly tuition bill, it can be paid later and CSLS can still provide legal assistance.

FACT: Waiving the quarterly fee on your tuition bill means that you will not be eligible for legal services during that quarter or for problems which arose during a quarter when you waived the fee. If you waived the fee but need the service later in the quarter, you are not eligible. Think of it like car insurance; you can't buy a car insurance policy to cover your accident after the accident occurred.
