Citizenship

Dear Parents and Families, Ryan Lombardi

I am writing in the middle of what I hope will be the final snowstorm of the winter here in Athens!  We are winding down the quarter and I'm sure your sons and daughters are beginning preparations for their finals that are just a few weeks away.

When I moved to Athens and began my position as Dean of Students nearly two years ago, I pledged to create a more open and continuous line of communication with parents. I feel it is important to share with you the reality of what occurs on our campus, which is most often good but sometimes very difficult too.  I can assure you that you won't find many other colleges or universities that take this approach, for fear that it won't create a positive image for them.  But my primary concern is not for our image. It is for our students, your sons and daughters.  And I plan to continue communicating with you in the coming years to ensure that we work together towards our shared goal of creating the best possible experience for all of the Ohio University family.

In light of the recent cases of bacterial meningitis on our campus, we have planned a live audio conference specifically for parents that will be held this Tuesday.  You can find details in the newsletter below, and I strongly encourage you to consider logging on and listening if you are available.

I want to personally thank you for your questions, suggestions and kind words throughout the quarter.  As always, if there is anything that my office can do to assist, please do not hesitate to email or call us at deanstu@ohio.edu or 740-593-1800.

Sincerely,Ohio

Ryan Lombardi
Dean of Students

Spring Break Travel Tips
beach
We hope that spring break will be a fun, positive, and relaxing break for Ohio University students.  It is a time for rest, relaxation, and to enjoy the company of family and friends. We know that some of our students plan their spring break vacation in a recreational environment that could pose safety challenges for those who participate.  Others may choose to go abroad and experience exciting new adventures for the first time.

We would like for you to help us remind our students to make good decisions regarding their social activities while enjoying their break.  For some helpful travel tips and spring break advice, please see the following websites:

 Ohio University Mom's Weekend Package
Ohio University's annual Mom's Weekend is approaching quickly; April 30 will be here before we know it.  The OU Parents Club of Greater Cleveland has worked with the university to create an opportunity to offer a special package this year that includes round trip travel by motor coach to Athens and accommodations at Bromley Hall for the weekend.  The package is designed to provide everything you need within a short walk; you can't get closer to campus.  The cost of the package is very reasonable but space is limited. All information must be provided to the OU Parents Club no later than Friday, March 26.

If you have any questions or are in need of further information please contact Diane Cerri (Diane_Cerri@ohnp.uscourts.gov) at 216-357-7361 (day) or 216-408-7700 or Bob Martin (remartin1350@oh.rr.com) at 440-951-0456.

February Leader of the Month: Brittany Wolverton
OhioBrittany was nominated by her peers for her inspirational work with Rural Action, Girl Power, and the Trimble School district. Ms. Wolverton created Future Women of Appalachia to meet the needs of a community of girls who are often under served. With plans of expanding her organization into other school districts within southeastern Ohio in the near future, Brittany is an outstanding example of leadership in action.

Brittany's Definition of Leadership:
"Leadership is taking initiative, staying confident, and persevering under pressure. Leadership is more than reaching a goal; it is about unavoidable failure, constant communication, and enduring positivity. Leadership is learning about yourself while empowering others."

Summer Programs for High School Students
High school students can choose from a variety of summer programs on the Ohio University campus.  Each program offers college credit for the experience.  Fees and selection criteria vary from program to program.  Here is a small sample of the opportunities available:

Summer Honors Academy
The Honors Academy is open to high school students who have completed their freshman, sophomore or junior years with a 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 grade scale.  It runs from June 21 through July 23, 2010, and gives students an opportunity to enroll in standard University courses of their choice.  Students may opt to live on campus or commute.  Close supervision and support is provided by student mentors from the Honors Tutorial College.  Students explore Ohio University resources and major options, participate in service learning projects, and enjoy structured extracurricular activities.  Full program information is available at http://www.outreach.ohio.edu/honorsacademy/

High School Journalism Workshop
The 65th annual Ohio University High School Journalism Workshop will be held June 17-19, 2010.  It is open to high school students who wish to improve their journalism skills or are considering pursuing journalism after high school.  Full program information is available at www.scrippsjschool.org/hsjw/

Sports Business Academy
New to Ohio University this summer, the Academy is designed for entering high school juniors and seniors, and for incoming college freshmen interested in the business of sports.  The weeklong experience (July 18-25, 2010) includes training by top faculty and industry executives, while combining classroom activities with practical experiences on campus and a visit to one of Ohio's professional teams.   Full program information is available at www.sportsad.ohio.edu/undergrad/academy/

For more information on these and other summer programs, contact Patricia Davidson, Asst. Director of Summer Sessions at davidson@ohio.edu or 740-593-1767.
Center for Student Legal Services Survey
OhioThe Center for Student Legal Services is the law office that serves only Ohio University students. There is an optional $8.00 legal service fee on your student's tuition bill which allows them access to this valuable service if paid. Because of the impeding switch to semesters in 2012, we are trying to obtain information regarding the fee change that will have to take place to coincide with the change to semesters. Please take a minute to answer the following three questions about the fee. Your opinion is very valuable to us!

You can access the survey here http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KSSY6QV

Should you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 740-594-8093 or visit us online at http://www.studentlegalrights.org/

Thank you from the staff of the Center for Student Legal Services.
