Greetings from the Dean of Students
|
Dear Ohio University Parents,
As we near the end of spring quarter, I've spent a lot of time reflecting on the events of the past year. It has been difficult at times -- losing several students, encountering the meningitis and swine flu scares and other student crises. Yet through all of this, I remain amazed at the passion and energy of your sons and daughters. There wasn't a week that passed that I didn't spend an evening attending some type of program or event featuring the hard work of our students. Though it is easy to focus on crisis situations, or those that are newsworthy, we must remind ourselves not to lose sight of the good that happens on a daily basis. A parent so aptly reminded me this year to enjoy the great moments that we have on campus, of which there are many!
It was my privilege to serve on behalf of your sons and daughters this year. I am grateful to you for allowing them to grow, learn and develop at Ohio University. As they prepare to return to you this summer I hope you will take the time to ask them all about their year in Athens. What did they enjoy? What are their concerns for next year? How can we all continue to support them through this exciting time in their life?
I've heard from many of you that you've appreciated our email updates and other expanded parent efforts this year. As a result of this, I've appointed one of my colleagues as the new coordinator for parent outreach. Chad Barnhardt will be joining my office this summer to further expand our parent outreach efforts. These will include more robust family weekends, newsletters, the creation of a parent advisory council and other on-going opportunities for parent engagement throughout the year. I'll introduce Chad formally in our first newsletter of the fall quarter.
Finally, I do hope you'll consider applying to our new Ohio Parents Advisory Council (OPAC). You can find details below about how to do this. It is my goal to continue our partnership in the coming years, and this is one step that will help us achieve that goal. If you have an opinion and are interested in making OU a better place for your son or daughter, please consider applying.
We will be taking a break from publishing these newsletters during the summer to focus on orientation and planning for the fall, but will be back before the start of the fall quarter. We will be around the office all summer, so please continue to let us know if we can be of service to you.
I wish you all the best for a peaceful and relaxing summer. I look forward to being back in touch in a couple of months. Thank you again for all of your support this year -- it made my first year at Ohio University quite enjoyable!
Sincerely, Ryan Lombardi Dean of Students |

| Residence Hall Closing Information |
As spring quarter comes to an end, we would like to make sure that you are informed of the residence hall check out instructions that your student received. Students are expected to check out of the halls no later than 24 hours after their last final exam. Students should pack all personal items, clean, sweep, take all trash to the dumpster outside of their building, thoroughly clean the microwave and refrigerator unit, reassemble beds, and ensure that the room is left in good condition. The in-hall staff (Resident Assistant) will be completing an inspection of the room with the student during the check out process and will collect all keys assigned to the student. The professional staff (Residential Coordinator/Assistant Residential Coordinator) will then complete a final inspection of all rooms and review any problems identified during the check out. Please remind your student to be an active participant in the closing floor meeting and to follow all instructions provided to them in order to have a successful and efficient check out.

Apply for the Ohio Parents Advisory Council
|
As the Division of Student Affairs works to enrich the programs and services offered to your students, we have designed a new initiative to gather your valuable feedback and support!
The Ohio Parents Advisory Council (OPAC) will assist the division with strategic planning, provide feedback about programs and policies, and give parents an opportunity to play a meaningful role in shaping a stellar undergraduate experience at OHIO.
Two parent representatives from each class year (2010, 2011, etc.) will make up OPAC, along with four at-large representatives (a parent couple counts as one representative). Any parent who has a student enrolled as an OHIO undergraduate can apply. Members of OPAC will be asked to attend bi-annual on-campus meetings-the first during Parents' Weekend in the fall and the second during the winter or spring quarter. OPAC members will also take part in regular "e-communication" with other parents on the council and OHIO staff. Lastly, council members will have opportunities to act as OHIO ambassadors as needed throughout the year. These are two-year appointments with the option to continue service.
To apply, please download an application at: http://www.ohio.edu/deanofstudents
Council members will be chosen by the Dean of Students and the Vice President for Student Affairs. Parents selected for the council will hear back from us this summer. Please direct questions about the OPAC to Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi at 740-593-1800 or deanstu@ohio.edu. |
Ohio University Summer Sessions
|
Even with increasing number of "super-seniors" taking five or more years to graduate, students often overlook the value of taking summer classes. Ohio University Summer Sessions is the smart way to spend the summer and earn up to a quarter of academic credit. For students who have transferred from another university or changed majors and are no longer on a four year track, Summer Sessions can help them catch up and graduate sooner. It is also a good idea for students doing internships or co-ops during the fall, winter, or spring quarters, allowing them to take time off during the regular-school year and not fall behind on credits. Summer Sessions has no priority registration and is a good way for students to get into classes that they were unable to register for during the regular school year. Additionally, many Tier II and Tier III classes are offered, helping students to fill their general requirements. Many students go home for the summer to work or because they do not have a place to live in Athens. While subletting is always an option, those who do go home can also take advantage of Summer Sessions. Five regional campuses and OU Online allow students to take classes from almost anywhere. Students who have participated in Summer Sessions and OU Online look back positively on their experiences. The most relaxed atmosphere of Athens in the summer, getting classes out of the way, smaller classes, and a closer relationship with professors and classmates were among the things surveyed students liked most. For more information, go to www.ohio.edu/summer/. It's a bright idea! |
| Helpful Hints For Moving Out Off-Campus |
The Center for Student Legal Services offers some advice on how to prevent your student from losing their security deposit when they live in off-campus housing:
·Make sure they keep permanent contact information for all their roommates. It's best to have the participation of all tenants if anyone wishes to dispute the deductions. ·Ensure that they send the landlord a forwarding address for each tenant in writing and that they keep a copy. They should do this as soon as possible. If your student forgets, make sure they do it within a week of moving. ·Encourage your student to clean the rental at least a week before move-out. It takes longer than most students expect! ·It is important for them to clean everything - walls, floors, appliances (inside, behind and underneath), etc. and clean thoroughly. If cleaning isn't your student's strong suit encourage them to consider enlisting the help of friends, family or a professional service. ·Document cleaning efforts by taking photographs of everything they clean. Be sure to include basements, porches, yards and the interior of appliances. If they don't have at least 50 photos, they haven't taken enough! ·On moving day, remove all belongings from the rental. Leave nothing behind or the students will be charged hefty trash fees. If your student is giving furniture to the next tenants, securely attach a note and take a photograph that shows the attached note! ·Document that your student did not damage the rental by taking photographs of walls, doors, windows, smoke alarms, window blinds, etc. ·The landlord has 30 days from the end of the lease to return the deposit. Pay attention to the calendar! ·Graduating seniors who paid the spring quarter CSLS fee remain eligible to use our services for the purposes of security deposit matters 90 days after graduation. **The Center for Student Legal Services is open to all OU students who are enrolled in classes and have paid the $8.00 legal service fee included as an option on the tuition bill**
