NEW YEAR 2012 NEWSLETTER
Before I get into all of our news from last year and future plans for the coming year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a happy new year and adventurous travels for 2012!

I want to thank everyone who trekked with us last year we appreciate your support making 2011 our busiest, most exciting and enjoyable year yet.

Highlights of the year include organising our first Makalu to Everest Expedition; helping four visually impaired people trek to Everest Base Camp; completing 28 day Lunana Snowman trek in Bhutan for second time; organising our seventh expedition to climb Mera Peak and our fifth trek around Dhaulagiri Circuit.

If you look further down this newsletter you will see detailed Trip Reports we have written for all of our western led treks organised in 2011. You will also see some feedback and testimonials sent by several people who travelled with us last year.

Looking ahead to 2012 we have developed an extensive program of treks and expeditions visiting Nepal, Bhutan, India (Ladakh), Pakistan and Tanzania (Kilimanjaro). Our aim is to be a specialist operator running trips to a small number of countries and to get to know these places better than anyone else!

Our passion has always been exploring remote areas of Himalaya and Karakoram and to develop original and inspirational itineraries. Coming up this year we have a number of treks that fit this ethos such as Upper Dolpo to Jomsom (April/ May 2012); Makalu to Everest Expedition (April/ May 2012); Snow Lake & Hispar La (July 2012) and Lunana Snowman (September/ October 2012).

Please take a look at the column on the left of this newsletter for our complete portfolio of western led treks we plan to run throughout the year in 2012. As you can see we have several new leaders who have joined us recently so I would like to welcome then on board. There is no doubt we now have the best leaders working for The Mountain Company, click here to read about our panel of western leaders.

These days many people expect higher standards of accommodation while on trek. During 2011 we noticed an increase in people using the network of luxury lodges in Everest and Annapurna region booking onto our Everest Luxury Lodge, Luxury Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Luxury Lodge treks.

Luxury lodges in Nepal are getting increasingly popular so if you are thinking of joining one of these treks then we recommend you get in touch with us soon so that we can reserve rooms for you especially in the busy months of April, October and November.

All of our itineraries including luxury lodge treks can be tailored to your requirements, just to let us know the details and we will propose a custom trip for you.

For 2012 we are organising a number of charity treks, in October we have an Open Charity Challenge to Kilimanjaro following Lemosho route followed in November by Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp. These treks are a great opportunity to raise sponsorship for a charity of your choice.

We are delighted that Love Hope Strength Foundation is returning in late November for their charity trek Everest Rocks 2. In 2007 we organised Everest Rocks 1 when thirty eight musicians, cancer survivors and mountaineers set off to reach Kalapathar near Everest Base Camp where they set a World Record for the highest concert ever performed. The success of Everest Rocks 1 resulted in the first mammography and internal radiation machines for the country of Nepal.

Please get in touch with us if you would like to discuss any of our treks, I will be in London for the next few months so you can call/ Skype or email at anytime. I am also available to meet in person if you can get to London just let me know.

Wishing you all the best for the New Year.

Trek on!

DHAULAGIRI CIRCUIT IN APRIL AND OCTOBER 2012

Dhaulagiri
Dhaulagiri seen from French Pass
Jill Lawson is leading Dhaulagiri Circuit in April 2012 this will be The Mountain Company's sixth trek around Dhaulagiri Circuit since Spring 2008, for more information on Jill's background and experience.

Dhaulagiri Circuit is a challenging trek around Dhaulagiri the world's seventh highest mountain crossing two Himalayan passes. The trek starts at Beni and then follows the Myagdi Khola river passing through beautiful Gurung villages with terraced fields framed by views of the Dhaulagiri massif.

After walking up the narrow Chonbarden gorge towards Dhaulagiri Base Camp we then cross French Pass into Hidden Valley. After crossing Dhampus Pass we start the long descent to Jomsom and then at the end of the trek we fly back to Pokhara.

MAKALU TO EVEREST EXPEDITION IN APRIL 2012
Makalu
Mount Makalu

Almas Khan is leading Makalu to Everest Expedition in April 2012, he is a very experienced and popular leader, for more information on Almas's background and experience

This will be The Mountain Company's second time organising Makalu to Everest Expedition. Our Makalu to Everest itinerary has been carefully designed to include sufficient time for acclimatisation in order to maximise your chances of completing the traverse into the Everest. There are logistical challenges in organising an expedition to such a remote area of the Himalaya and this is only possible by bringing a strong and experienced Sherpa team.

GHT- UPPER DOLPO TO JOMSOM IN MAY 2012

Upper Dolpo
Upper Dolpo
Gary Pfisterer is leading Upper Dolpo to Jomsom in May 2012. I led a reconnaissance trek in Spring 2009 to find out how this went please read my trip report: Trip report for Upper Dolpo to Jomsom trek in May 2009

In the travel magazine Wanderlust's June edition they rate Upper Dolpo as "Best for epic views". Wanderlust also describes Upper Dolpo as "possibly the most beautiful place in entire Himalayas" and I certainly agree with them!

Our Upper Dolpo to Jomsom itinerary does not follow the more popular Dolpo Circuit instead we head further north to an area very close to the Tibet border and then walk out on the challenging trail to Jomsom thereby completing one section of The Great Himalaya Trail ("GHT").

SUMMER TREKS IN PAKISTAN LED BY ADRIAN SUMMERS
K2
K2

We are planning to organise two treks in Pakistan over summer 2012 with both of them being led by our Pakistan specialist, Adrian (Ade) Summers.

Ade certainly knows Pakistan well in the past having led four treks to K2 & Gondogoro La; two treks to Snow Lake & Hispar La and also climbed Spantik Peak and Workman's Peak. For more information an Ade's background and experience.

In July Ade will lead Snow Lake & Hispar La trek

Snow Lake is a high altitude glacial basin over 16km wide located at the head of the Biafo and Hispar glaciers. This vast river of ice connects two ancient mountain kingdoms; Hunza in the west with Baltistan in the east. Snow Lake area was described by the famous mountaineer explorer Eric Shipton as 'the last blank on the map'.

In August Ade will K2 & Gondogoro La trek, this is considered to be one of the world's great treks with breathtaking scenery unsurpassed anywhere else in the high mountains.

NUBRA AND SHYOK VALLEY VIA LASERMO LA IN AUGUST 2012

Nubra Valley
Nubra Valley
Alan Ward is also leading Nubra and Shyok Valley via Lasermo La trek in August 2012. This is a circuit trek in one of the least visited areas of Ladakh with unspoilt landscape and stunning views of the Karakoram mountains especially from the summit of Lasermo la pass at 5,400m.

Shyok valley has vast alluvial plains with bacterian camels roaming around the sand dunes grazing the seabuckthorn bushes. To the north of Nubra valley is the Siachen Glacier and to the north west Sasser Pass and the famous Karakoram Pass that connect Nubra with Xinjiang in China. Previously there was much trade passing through the area to East Turkestan and Central Asia as part of the Silk Route. Shyok river meets the Nubra river to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges.

LUNANA SNOWMAN IN SEPTEMBER/ OCTOBER 2012
Lunana Snowman
View from Karchung La

Almas Khan is leading Lunana Snowman trek in September/ October 2012.  Almas has already completed Snowman trek three times including both Bumthang and Nikkla Chu exit trails from Lunana, for more information on Almas's background and experience

The Mountain Company has a good track record of organising treks in Bhutan, our groups have successfully completed the complete Lunana Snowman trek in 2006, 2008 and 2011.

Lunana Snowman is a 28 day trek crossing the north of Bhutan along the border with Tibet covering 356km and crossing eight Himalayan mountain passes. Few westerners have visited the remote district of Lunana due to its inaccessibility; one can only get in and out by crossing mountain passes over 5,000m that are frequently blocked by snow. Our itinerary completes the full journey starting in Paro and finishing near Bumthang.

FEEDBACK AND TESTIMONIALS FROM OUR 2011 TREKS

After each trek we ask each member for feedback on their experience and for any improvements on our service and of course we will incorporate any points raised into our planning for future treks. Please take a look at our testimonial page on TMC website, I have copied a selection of comments received from our 2011 treks below:

Alistair (UK)- Everest Luxury Lodges:

"I can only say good things about our honeymoon trek, the guide Lakpa was brilliant - He was so welcoming and helpful towards us and other groups that we met on the trek. His knowledge was also very good which made the trek even more enjoyable. Also Tulsi in Kathmandu & the porter Ziban were excellent as well so to be honest with you I can't fault a thing!"

Harriet (UK)- Mera Peak Expedition:

"Thanks so much for an amazing trek, it really was brilliant! It was really well organised and was great having the extra time to acclimatise compared to other treks and I've no doubt it made the trek much more enjoyable and the summit a more achievable goal." Click here for full testimonial

Mark (Canada)- Lunana Snowman:

"The Lunana Snowman trek in Bhutan was for me a dream fulfilled that transcended the magical. Yes - it was long and challenging but now indelibly etched on my mind as the most beautiful place I have been privileged to visit. The highlights were....Karchung La....the rest day in Thanza......Tshorim Lakes....Saga la ....simply stunning... and inevitably the Swiss Guest House! Superb leadership by Roland; a master logistician and outdoorsman.....an absolute gentleman."

Henry (UK)- Dhaulagiri Circuit:

"The trek was absolutely amazing so well organised and I thought that our western leader Lee did an excellent job leading the team was brilliant at keeping the atmosphere of the trek happy and focussed. All of the Nepalese crew were great as well especially our Sirdar Jhire Rai and Saila the cook provided delicious food throughout the trek. It really was a fantastic a trek and I would recommend your company without a moment's hesitation to anyone."

Enrico and Alessandra (Italy)- Makalu to Everest:

"For our recent Makalu to Everest expedition we think the overall organization has been very good and the Nepali staff did a very impressive good job. We appreciated once again, as during your Dhaulagiri Circuit trek in 2010, your personal effort in taking care of all aspects of the organisation and of any possible problem of the participants. Your mountaineering experience and competence is of course a value in a trek like this."  Click here for full testimonial

Sofia and David (UK)- Annapurna Luxury Lodges:

"We both had an absolutely fantastic holiday and found coming back to the UK and work quite tricky! Your organisation was superb, the guides, porters, drivers were all fantastic we had a superb time and would not hesitate to recommend your company to friends."

For two members, Neil and Roger, booked on our Kanchenjunga Circuit trek in November 2011 this was their third trek with The Mountain Company, they had previously trekked with us on Manaslu Circuit in October 2007 and again on Dhaulagiri Circuit in October 2009. We are very grateful to receive repeat bookings and really appreciate their loyalty in coming back for another trek, at least it shows we are doing something right!
