I got back to UK a few weeks ago after our Spring season in Nepal, we managed to run all of our treks in March, April and May in spite of the best efforts of the Icelandic volcano and Maoist demonstrations in Kathmandu.
In May I led a recce trek to Upper Dolpo, this is a very remote area in west Nepal close to the Tibet border. Our group successfully crossed all of the high passes on the walk out to Jomsom thereby completing a section of the Great Himalaya Trail.
"Upper Dolpo to Jomsom trek is arguably one of the best treks in Nepal" and "better than Lunana Snowman in Bhutan", these were some of the comments from the group who had between them done most of the classic treks in Himalayas. For further information on this trek please see TMC blog for our Upper Dolpo Trip Report and also Photos Part One and Part Two.
We are planning to run our Upper Dolpo to Jomsom trek again in May 2011 with Gary Pfisterer as western leader, if you are interested in joining this group please take a look at Upper Dolpo to Jomsom trek webpage.
In Spring 2011, I am looking forward to leading two treks exploring the Makalu region in Nepal. One will visit Makalu Base Camp and then return to Tumlingtar, the second group will cross from Makalu Base Camp into Everest region following the most challenging section of the Great Himalaya Trail.
For the rest of the year The Mountain Company's groups are filling up fast, our K2 & Gondogoro La trek in August is now full and there is only limited availabilty for Dhaulagiri Circuit and Mera Peak in October and November. If you are planning to visit Nepal in Autumn (Fall) then I suggest you get in touch with us soon.
As some of you already know for a number of years The Mountain Company has partnered with Himalayan Education Lifeline Programme ("HELP"). If you have enjoyed visting the Himalayas and would like to contribute in some way we recommend this good cause. Please take a look at HELP website for more information on their good work helping young people of the Himalayas.
And lastly, I was interviewed recently by Colin Wallace from the website Mount Everest The British Story. I thought that Colin came up with some interesting questions to ask, please click here to read my answers.
I will be in UK until early August, please get in touch at anytime if you would like to discuss any of our treks.
Kind regards,
Roland Hunter

Lunana Snowman
We are hoping to run our Lunana Snowman trek in Bhutan starting September 24th this year however we need a few more people to sign up before we can guarantee to run the trip.
Gary Pfisterer will lead this trek, he is one of the few people around who has already successfully completed Lunana Snowman so knows the trail well and also the logistical challenges in this remote area.
If you are interested in joining this group please get in touch with TMC office very soon. For trips to Bhutan it is better to book early so that we can secure the flights to/from Paro with Druk Air.
TMC Group at Kalapatar
The Mountain Company is organising an open charity fundraising trek to Everest Base Camp in November 2011. Alan Ward will lead this group and there will also be a British doctor helping the leadership team.
The dates are from November 29th to December 17th 2011. The price for the trek is 1,395 plus a minimum contribution to a charity of your choice of 1,000.
Stunningly beautiful Phoksumdo Lake
Phoksumdo Lake
As mentioned above Gary is leading our Upper Dolpo to Jomsom trek in May 2011. We think that the best time to do this trek is during the month of May, this gives you the best chance of crossing the high passes to Jomsom. September is probably more popular with trekking groups however often the passes are icey making travel impossible for the pack animals.
Upper Dolpo has been described as the last enclave of pure Tibetan culture. This region has a vast and rugged landscape inhabited by a hardy and enterprising folk who live in some of the highest villages in the world. Upper Dolpo is very rich in wildlife look out for herds of blue sheep, musk deer, Himalayan fox, marmots, eagles, lammergeier and of course the elusive snow leopard.
Stok Kangri
This Summer Alan Ward is leading our Stok Kangri expedition and is also returning to lead this trip for us in July 2011.
Our Stok Kangri expedition starts with a trek from Chilling through typical Ladakhi landscape before arriving to Stok Kangri Base Camp. We put in a high camp at 5,300m, and after an early morning start we cross the glacier to reach a ridge that we follow to the summit.
Stok Kangri would be a suitable objective for a climber visiting the Himalayas for a first time or keen hill walkers with some previous experience of using crampons and ice axe.
Mount Makalu seen from near Base Camp
As mentioned above Roland is leading two treks visiting the Makalu region in Spring 2011, the first group will trek to Makalu Base Camp returning to Tumlingtar and the second group will cross the high passes into the Everest region.

Our Makalu to Everest trek takes you from Tumlingtar in the steamy lowlands near the Arun River over the Shipton La and into the remote and beautiful Barun river valley before arriving to Makalu Base Camp. From here we cross Sherpani Pass over to Baruntse Base Camp, then cross West Col to Panch Pokhari followed by the Amphu Laptsa into the Everest region.

Some of you might remember Roland went on expedition to Mount Makalu in 2009 as result we have alot of experience in this remote area of Nepal. If you are interested to find out more about Roland's Makalu expediton please take a look at TMC blog
Everest Summit Lodge at Tashinga
ESL at Tashinga
Over the last few years The Mountain Company has organised several private itineraries for people wanting to trek to Everest Base Camp while staying at the best lodges available in the Khumbu.
As a result of this demand we have decided to set up fixed date departures for our Luxury Everest Base Camp trek. This itinerary uses the chain of Everest Summit Lodges ("ESLs") at Monjo, Tashinga and Pangboche. Where there are no ESLs we use the best lodges available: Zamling in Namche Bazaar, Snow Lion or Peaceful in Dingboche and Ecolodge in Lobuche.
High Frontiers by Kenneth Bauer
High Frontiers
If you plan to join Gary Pfisterer on our Upper Dolpo trekin May next year then we highly recommend getting a copy of High Frontiers by Kenneth Bauer. This book helps one understand the culture and local economy of Upper Dolpo as well as some of the conservation and environmenal issues faced by the Dolpo-pa inhabitants.
The author lived in Tinje village with a local family while researching this book funded by a Fulbright scholarship. He went on to found DROKPA a charity that partners with pastoral communities to implement grassroots development projects in the Himalayas and Central Asia, please click here to view Drokpa website

Other books on Upper Dolpo worth reading include Himalayan Pilgrimmage by David Snelgrove and The Snow Leopard by Peter Matthiessen. Upper Dolpo was also used as the location for Eric Valli's superb film Himalaya.
