2010 NEW YEAR NEWSLETTER
I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year.
The big news from The Mountain Company since our last Newsletter is the launch of our redeveloped website, if you have not already seen it please take a look at www.themountaincompany.co.uk
Our aim was to design a website with increased search functionality as well as incorporating improved information and a clearer layout.
We have also included our favourite photos to give you an idea of what to expect, hopefully you will find our selection of images inspiring! We would be very interested to hear what you think and any comments you might have.
Please scroll down this newsletter for information on The Mountain Company's trek program for this year. However I wanted to bring to your attention to two very special reconnaissance treks we have planned for 2010 and 2011.
The second one is the Makalu to Everest trek that I plan to to lead in April 2011. This is a very challenging expedition crossing several passes over 6,000m, it is the crux section of the new Great Himalayan Trail, for more information on the Makalu to Everest trek
If you would like to keep up to date on the latest news from the Himalayas and Karakoram then please check into our blog regularly, the link is at themountaincompany.blogspot.com
I will be in London through to late March so please get in touch anytime if you would like to discuss any of our treks.
Best wishes for the New Year!
Kind regards
Roland Hunter

AUTUMN/ FALL SEASON 2009 The Mountain Company had a busy season during Autumn/ Fall 2009, in October Gary Pfisterer led a group around Dhaulagiri Circuit. In November Roland led another successful expedition to the summit of Mera Peak (his fourth Mera summit) followed in December by a trek to Everest Base Camp for the charity Islamic Relief.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support in 2009, it was great to see many familiar faces in Kathmandu this year on repeat bookings. I managed to meet almost every one of our clients in Nepal this year and I very much appreciate all of the feedback received from you. |
NEW ITINERARY FOR EVEREST BASE CAMP We recently updated our Everest Base Camp itinerary, this is a variation to the standard trek where we have included several sections allowing you to explore off the main trail to quieter areas of the Khumbu.
As before our new itinerary still has 14 walking days Lukla to Lukla however you now have the chance to walk towards Ama Dablam Base Camp and also see the Sherpa village of Phortse.on the walk back from Everest Base Camp.
We are confident that you will be staying at the best teahouse lodges in each location. Roland recently inspected all of the lodges during his trek to Everest Base Camp in December. Each year new lodges are built and others upgraded, for 2010 we have made one change where we now plan to use the brand new Mountain Resort in Phakding.
Our March 2010 departure is now guaranteed to run.

UPPER DOLPO TO JOMSOM TREK IN APRIL 2010
As mentionned above in the Introduction to this newsletter Roland will lead the Upper Dolpo to Jomsom trek as a reconnaisance in April 2010, this is now guaranteed to run.
The Upper Dolpo to Jomsom is an epic journey that crosses a number of high passes in a rarely visited area of Nepal near the Tibet border. The trail travels through a Tibetan Buddhist region where you will see colourful prayer flags, mani walls and monasteries along the way.
Most other trekking companies run the relatively easier Upper Dolpo Circuit whereas we plan to walk out on the remote and challenging trail to Jomsom. Upper Dolpo was first written about by David Snelgrove in his book titled "Himalayan Pilgrimmage" and more recently by Peter Matthiessen in "The Snow Leopard".

EVEREST BASE CAMP CHARITY CHALLENGE APRIL 2010 The Mountain Company is organising a fundraising trek to Everest Base Camp trek for the charity Development in Literacy (DIL) in April 2010. Roland is looking forward to returning to the Khumbu to lead this group.
This trek is now guaranteed to run however there are still some places available if you are interested in helping to raise funds for them. The dates are departing UK on April 1st and flying back on April 18th. Please get in touch with TMC office soon if you are interested in joining the group.

LUNANA SNOWMAN TREK IN SEPTEMBER 2010
Gary Pfisterer is looking forward to returning to lead the epic Lunana Snowman in Bhutan, he is one of the few people around who has already successfully completed this trek on a previous occasion.
The Snowan trek is unique, you will visit Lunana a remote and rarely visited region of the Bhutan Himalaya on the border with Tibet. This is a 28 day trek covering 356km while crossing 8 Himalayan mountain passes!!
The Mountain Company has considerable experience in organising the Snowman trek and understand the logistical challanges involved. Roland led a group in Autumn 2008 that successfully complete the traverse from Paro to Bumthang.

STOK KANGRI EXPEDITION IN JULY 2010
Alan Ward is leading our Stok Kangri expedition this summer, he has previously summited this mountain so knows the route well.
The trip starts with an interesting trek from Chilling through typical Ladakhi landscape before arriving to Stok Kangri Base Camp. There is also an optional extension after the trip to visit the Taj Mahal.

PAKISTAN SUMMER 2010 The Mountain Company is hoping to run a full program of treks in Pakistan over the summer of 2010. In July Roland will lead Snow Lake and Hispar La followed in August by K2 and Gondogoro La trek.
