We recently set up an online book store where we have selected our collection of favourite books. The online store includes guidebooks, mountaineering tales, classic travel books, maps, instructional climbing and mountaineering, altitude and acclimatisation medical and first aid books.
Hopefully this will be a useful resource for anyone with an interest in the Himalayas whether you are researching your next trip or are more interested in some armchair mountaineering! You can access the bookstore through our homepage via the link "Photos, maps and DVDs" or by clicking here
Roland has written reviews for most of the books, his favourite one at the moment is Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . OneSchool at a Time by Greg Mortenson. If you are joining The Mountain Company this summer on the K2 & Gondogoro la trek then you might be interested to read this one. Take a look at Roland's review on this book by clicking here |
Western led treks for 2008 |
Everest north col expedition, Tibet April 27th to May 22nd '08, £3950, led by Roland Hunter This is an opportunity to climb up to 7000m on Mt Everest, the highest mountain in the world! It will be led by Roland Hunter, who reached the summit of Everest via the North East ridge in 2001.
This trip will suit someone who has some previous climbing experience and is fit and determined. We would encourage anyone who is interested in joining this expedition to get in touch with us as soon as possible. It is going to be a busy year on Everest in 2008 with the Chinese organising a vast expedition to take the Olympic flame to the summit so we will need to apply at an early to get the permits.
For more information on the Everest north col expedition K2 & Gondogoro la, Pakistan The 2008 K2 & Gondogoro la trek is going to be very special as you will have the opportunity to spend a night at K2 base camp and meet the K2 expedition team that Roland is organising. The K2 team are planning to climb the Abruzzi ridge and at the moment there are 10 climbers on board.

Lunana Snowman trek, Bhutan September 29th to November 2nd 2008, £3850, led by Roland Hunter The Lunana Snowman is a very special trek that crosses the full length of the mountains in the remote region in the north of Bhutan. More people have climbed Everest than successfully complete this trek! Factors such as the high altitude, long distances, climate, remoteness and logistical organisation that makes this into a challenging trek.

Gear recommendations |

We have answered below two regular pre trip questions we receive from clients booking treks with us.
Question: what is the best way of purifying water while trekking? Answer: we do not recommend bringing water filters on the treks in the Himalayas because they are slow to use and often become blocked by silt. By far the best product is Biox Acqua, this water treatment is more effective than chlorine or iodine yet does not leave bad tastes or colours behind. It kills dangerous bacteria and viruses including cryptosporidium and giardia.
Question: I am looking for a crampon that I plan to use on a easy to moderate snow slope for only one day of a 3 week trek. Do you have any recommendations?
Answer: there is a lightweight crampon available called the Stubai Ultralight Universal which would be a good choice. This crampon has two good features: firstly it is made from aluminium so is super lightweight at 590g. Why bother carrying a crampon such as the Grivel G12 weighing twice the weight for an easy snow slope? Secondly, they do not require a stiff boot so they can fit onto any boot apparently from moon boats to flip flops! At USD$75 (about £40) they are very affordable, check out www.everestgear.com |
Mountaineering news from Himalayas |
Everest This year has been another bumper crop for the Everest climbing season, as of today there has been 500 summits (and also 5 deaths).
The season started off on April 30th with five Sherpas from Himex summitting Everest followed by a bold oxygenless climb by Kazakhs, Maxut Zhumayev & Vassily Pivtsov. The Kazakhs were pushed to their limits and spent 48 hours without food or water. Their gamble paid off although they had to accept help from other teams on the way back down the mountain.
The huge Chinese team was up next, this was a trial run for taking the Olympic torch to the summit next year. On May 9th 17 climbers from their team stood on the summit and apparently also successfully lit the torch!
English climber David Tait was hoping to be the first person to complete a double traverse of Everest going from Tibet to Nepal and back again! David and Phurba Sherpa stood on the summit on May 15th and from there successfully reached the Nepalese base camp. He decided to quit while he was ahead and stick with the achievement of a single traverse and not climb back to the summit and over to Tibet. For more information have a look at his website http://www.davidtait.com
From May 16th to May 22nd waves of people reached the Everest summit taking advantage of the stable weather and low winds. There are still a number of team hoping to reach the summit over the next few weeks such as Project Himalaya and also the Altitude Everest expedition who are re-enacting Mallory and Irvine's climb (Leo Holding is Irvine and Conrad Anker is Mallory!). For more information check out their all singing and dancing website at http://www.ueverest.com
Kangchenjunga Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world, has only one team climbing it this year. It is a small Spanish team led by Oscar Cadiach, you might recall Oscar from his successful expedition on K2's Magic line in 2005. It is not clear at this stage whether or not this team have summitted Kanch yet, the last communication received from this team was on May 16th.
Manaslu On May 19th Ralf Dujmovits' Amical team summitted Manaslu making this Ralf's 12th 8000m peak. There was a lot of snow on the route this year so Ralf and Hirotaka Takeuchi both had to break trail from Camp 3. They roped up in order to cross a snow cornice to reach the rocky summit. Ralf and Hirotaka arrived to the summit in the morning and the rest of the team arrived a little later.
Dhaulagiri There was sad news on Dhaulagiri when two Spanish climbers, Santiago Sagaste and Ricardo Valencia, were killed by an avalanche while they were at Camp 2. Other tents in the camp were hit by the avalanche but Javi Serrano and Austrian Gerlinde Kaltenbruner were luckily able to escape.
Annapurna There was a strong collection of climbers on Annapurna this year. This peak is known as one of the difficult and dangerous of the 8000m peaks. On May 23rd the climbers spent the whole day trying to find a way through the serac band on the route to Camp 4. At this point six of the climbers decided the risks were too high whereas Andrew Lock, Ivan Vallejo, Serguey Bogomolov and Fernando Gonzalez Rubio decided to climb on and reached the top on May 24th. This is Andrew's 12th 8000m peak and it is looking like he will be become the first Australian to climb all 14 with only Shishapangma and Makalu to go. | |
