Makahiki Farms 100% Kona Extra Fancy Coffee was voted the Chefs' Choice Silver Medal winner at the Kona Coffee Council's annual Cream of the Crop Competition.

The event was held July 25th at the Four Seasons Hualalai Resort here on the Big Island. We were able to meet people from all over and "talk story" on a warm, beautiful sunny Hawaii day. We were especially pleased by the nice comments we received on our coffee.

The Chefs' Choice awards are especially meaningful because they are a blind competition judged by trained culinary experts. We are proud of our consistency in award placement at this event since its inception in 2004.

It is late November and we are about two-thirds of the way through our harvest season which runs from July through January. It has been a very dry fall in Kona, so we've been relying on our orchard drip irrigation system to keep the trees healthy and in top form during the heavy producing season. We expect to harvest once in December and again in January, prior to pruning the orchard to reset the annual cycle and get us started on next year.

We were able to share our coffee growing and processing methods with other farmers in Kona earlier this year when we hosted a workshop in association with the Kona Coffee Council. This was an opportunity for us to give back to the coffee community and help support the new (and not so new) farms and farmers.
