The Buzz March 2008
Artists Working in Encaustic -
Spring has sprung in northern California.  Baby animals are in the fields, rabbits in the factory loft, and precious beeswax scent is in the air.  March includes teaching in four cities and advance preparation for the National Encaustic Conference at Montserrat College of Art in June.  It's going to be another creative year!

Jeff Schaller: Recent Work
Schaller:She's Dreaming OfJeff Schaller "I have been focusing on images of women in my recent paintings. Since then I have become fascinated with skin tones and dragging the brush across the board to create hair. This image gave me a great reason to paint it so large at 36" x 36". I start by laying down generic shades of the image: a flesh tone, white highlights, yellowish hair and a background. Once the board is filled, I fuse it. Then I go in and begin to build up my shadows and highlights, fusing every once in a while. I don't have a set time or process. Basically when I need a break and want to step back, I'll fuse it. The last colors I apply are white and black. This is where the fun begins! I take a big brush and let it skim across the painting to create hair. Once the figure and hair are finished I fuse the image and then decide what to write. I wanted this painting to really pop yet remain warm so I used Irgazine Orange from Evans Encaustic and that gave it the brightness it needed. The words radiate off the softness of the image."

Spring Price Increase
RosesRedVioletsBlue
Well, the impact of bees abandoning their colonies has been all over the news.  It's sad for the bees, hard on our food chain, and a challenge for those of us who use beeswax in our art.  We will keep the price increase as minimal as possible and delay it as long as possible.
