Introduction to the Medicine Wheel
(Bundle Ceremony)
The Sacred Shahaptian Healing Way (Sha Way) is a constant thread offered tohealers of all kinds. It is a Sacred Walk and a Sacred Talk. Every Medicine Man,Medicine Woman, Traditional Spiritual Leader and Native American Practitioner ofthe Nemenhah Band is invited and encouraged to introduce their own medicineand belief systems into this sacred way because it contains fundamental ceremoniesthat harmonize with the pulse of the Universe and, therefore, does notcome into conflict with any religion. In this training material, we will use the term"medicine" often. We do not intend for anybody to understand this word in themodern sense - as in "the practice of medicine." We intend for the word to beused in the native traditional sense of the "Medicine Man or Woman," withoutreference at all to modern medical practices.Why is ceremony important? Well, strictly on the level of healers, there are ancientceremonies associated with the Sacred Medicine Wheel that provide a veryreal safety net in our legal climate. If, for example, the Naturopath or MasterHerbalist were to beginand end their day with the Bundle Ceremonies, then allthat transpires during the course of that day may be said to be part of theBundle Opening and Closing. If they offered their services as a Medicine Man orMedicine Woman, then their offering would be part of a sacred ceremony

It was very refreshing to see a packed audience listening intently to a lecture
that discussed the individual empowerment and simple truths to be found in
nature. Flanking Adams on either side of the stage were baskets of raw
vegetables which he would point to at various times during the seminar to remind
us that those baskets held the "medicines" - in his opinion - which returned him
to vibrant health from the edge of obesity and diabetes. The message was clear:
those baskets also held the potential to boost or return the health of most of
us. This is a message rarely conveyed in today's world filled with purported
"wonder" drugs. Today, all we need, it seems, is a signature on a prescription
pad, and we are suddenly transported to the magical world of cures in a pill --
so what if they come with a list of side effects a mile long?
