Woodrow "Woody" Marcus
Woody Marcus
"Emerging in 3D"

A 2005 graduate of the Emerging Entrepreneurs program, Woody Marcus operates his large-scale business of design, animation, and visualization almost entirely on his own: "There's me, and there's my five computers."  His business, 3D Visual Concepts, provides computer-generated design visualization for architects, engineers, and inventors, including 3D renderings, "fly-thru" or "walk-thru" animation, and product simulation, and has served clients as big as the University of Akron and Cleveland's Regional Transit Authority (RTA).

Having worked as an architectural designer for Picker International for 26 years, Woody saw the opportunity to start his own firm when Picker was sold to another company and he was asked to relocate. Woody wanted to stay in Cleveland, and realized he was prepared to take the next logical, but intimidating step: going out on his own.  "Twelve of my twenty-six years at Picker were spent as a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) manager, so I had the necessary training and experience." Seven years later, he provides design for some of the region's most ambitious bids. Some current projects include the proposed RTA Stephanie Tubbs Jones Transit Center at 21st and Prospect Avenue (near Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center and the YMCA), the proposed renovations for the University of Akron student basketball facilities, Asian Town Center on 38th Street and Superior Avenue, the Power Sports Institute in North Randall, and the Laurel School Wellness Center in Russell Township. Past clients of 3D Visual Concepts have been the Cleveland Browns, Osborne Engineering, Panzica Construction, Ubiquitous Design, Ralph Tyler Companies, and Ozanne Construction.

During his tenure in the Emerging Entrepreneurs program, Woody discovered leadership skills and best practices in business management that he tailored to fit his uncommon business. "I liked the educational aspect of the classes especially combined with the networking as a follow-up. The camaraderie-it's all ongoing. Just like developing as an entrepreneur, it's all ongoing," he says.

The Emerging Entrepreneurs program also helped Woody build several lasting relationships, which, he insists, are a constant and rewarding effort. He says, "These relationships don't develop overnight, but the networking aspect of it is very powerful." Not surprisingly then, many of his fellow Emerging Entrepreneurs have been among 3D Visual Concepts' recent clients, with projects such as Fit for Life, a health and fitness facility in Warrensville Heights owned by emerging entrepreneurs alum Carl Harmon. As Woody's business continues to grow, it's clear relationships like these and the work of the Presidents' Council are paying off.

"Driving the Presidents' Council"

It's hard to imagine where the Presidents' Council would be without the meaningful contributions of its associates. Scott Clemmer, vice president and general manager of Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Westlake, Ohio, is no exception.

As a committed associate, Scott has donated to the Presidents' Council Foundation and has been active in the PC Scholars program. Scott recently provided the foundation with another generous donation that will help provide scholarships to graduating seniors of the PC Scholars Program. Scott has also been involved with the organization on more than one level. Through his relationship with the Presidents' Council, Scott became interested in the PC Scholars career-readiness program. Scott helped the program by providing a Human Resources representative from his company to facilitate a course that covered completing applications, building resumes, and developing interviewing skills. This course provides invaluable skills to PC Scholars looking to set themselves apart as they head out into a tough job market.

Scott's contribution demonstrates the kind of unique and committed partnerships that underscore a core value and purpose of The Presidents' Council: to forge a network of long-lasting relationships that extend beyond its ring of members. Scott's contribution will help ensure that our PC Scholars continue to put their best foot forward as they get out into the community and help spread the positive message of The Presidents' Council.

"Partnering for Progress"

As The Presidents' Council aggressively moves on its 2009 agenda, the newsletter gives us an opportunity to highlight various events and people who reinforce how The Presidents' Council's proven leadership, partnering/relationship development, and strategic investments make a real impact throughout the region.

Not long after the last edition of our newsletter hit in-boxes, The Presidents' Council's leadership team joined associate member Henry Meyer, chairman & CEO of Key Bank, to hold an associates' breakfast meeting hosted by Sandy Pianalto, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland where a strong showing of associates were provided an update on The Presidents' Council and heard about issues in the economy from Sandy Pianalto. The Presidents' Council looks forward to holding more breakfast meetings and continuing to meet with individual associates as well as prospective new associate members.

On that note, our meetings with associate members, such as Chris Connor, chairman & CEO Sherwin Williams, helped us add two new associates to The Presidents' Council: Rich Stovsky from Pricewaterhouse Coopers LLP and Pat Mullin of Deloitte & Touche LLP. We welcome Rich and Pat, and look forward to developing a long-standing relationship with them and their businesses.

And it's relationships with associates, such as Scott Clemmer from Enterprise Rent-A-Car, that provide needed resources to The Presidents' Council to support our work and programs. You can read more about the value of Scott's relationship with The Presidents' Council in this edition of the newsletter.

It's our focus on partnering and relationship development that led to a successful meeting with MetroHealth recently. A group of more than 30 Presidents' Council members and emerging entrepreneurs met with key leadership at MetroHealth to explore opportunities to work together.  Cultivating alliances and building relationships with our associate members and other stakeholders is something we do as often as possible.  And it's working.

The Presidents' Council also congratulates the 10 enthusiastic and engaged graduates of our newest class of Emerging Entrepreneurs. To date, 85 emerging entrepreneurs have graduated from this invaluable program and moved on to build successful businesses while also maintaining strong connections to The Presidents' Council.  In this edition of the newsletter, you will read about Woodrow "Woody" Marcus, a graduate of the emerging entrepreneurs program, who is using his experiences and new found relationships through The Presidents' Council to make his mark in the real and virtual worlds.

Finally, The Presidents' Council remains a strong group of men and women who have worked hard to create value for their businesses and for our community. Our member portfolio reveals the story of Ralph Tyler, and his efforts to build a world-class company while also giving back to his community in a world-class way.  His story is truly inspirational.

The work of our members, associates, emerging entrepreneurs, and PC Scholars continues to make a difference throughout the region. This newsletter tells their stories. The goal is to broaden awareness of The Presidents' Council's valuable brand as it effectively builds economic empowerment and successfully advances African-American businesses throughout Northeast Ohio.

 "Inspiring the Next Generation"

Ralph Sheldon Tyler bears an impressive and somewhat daunting family history of firsts. As a descendent of James Seneca Tyler, the first African-American elected clerk of the Ohio House of Representatives, and the son of Ralph C. Tyler, the first African-American civil engineer licensed in Ohio, Ralph has inherited quite a legacy. But he is far from intimidated by his heritage. Instead, he's built on it, and is creating his own unique legacy as chief executive officer and president of Ralph Tyler Companies.

With a background in law and regulatory matters, Ralph did not expect to head one of the United States' oldest multi-culturally staffed architectural, engineering & program management firms. "I never thought I'd work for my dad, but he inspired me." The business started in 1978 as a small consulting firm with six employees. Ralph Tyler Companies now includes seven offices across the United States and one in Mumbai, India, and has partnered with clients as large as General Motors.

Ralph was once the executive director of The Greater Cleveland Roundtable (which later reorganized to become The Greater Cleveland Partnership), where he handled issues of diversity and economic development in Cleveland. Before that, he worked for Citibank in New York City and TRW in Cleveland. When his father suffered a heart attack and stroke, Ralph was called upon to intervene in his father's small business. Ralph notes that "I went in to close down Dad's company. I didn't think I'd have a viable role, but I realized there were opportunities that existed in the public and private sector that we could fulfill." Ralph Tyler Companies is now a two-time recipient of the Weatherhead 100 Award from Case Western Reserve University and has donated $817,000 worth of scholarships around the country to minorities.

Ralph's experience with The Greater Cleveland Roundtable laid the groundwork for his work as a pioneer and mentor of successful minority businesses in Cleveland. Not only did it allow him to become involved in issues he cared deeply about, but it also prepared him for his current role as the CEO of a national company. "It gave me exposure to both the public and private sector," he said. This balanced approach became a tenet of Ralph Tyler Companies, and the primary reason for its longevity: "The biggest challenge in this time of economic decline is that there just aren't a lot of dollars in the public sector, and there's a decline in the private sector in firms like ours. A balanced portfolio does better, enables a firm to deal better with the hiccups, because they go in cycles."

Ralph's work with The Greater Cleveland Roundtable led the way for his involvement in the Presidents' Council, but it was also the result of his history of social and economic engagement. When asked how he became involved in the Presidents' Council, Ralph said, it "was an outgrowth of activities that existed sometimes at the picnic table, and sometimes at the board room table, [involving] how we address inclusion and diversity." He continued, "I think leaders both conservative and liberal realized that there was a hole that existed in this region. With my role at the Roundtable, we were able to share with one another some of the challenges and opportunities we face in our businesses and support one another. And what the Presidents' Council focused on was the African-American leaders that would take a responsible role in trying to advance the idea of both inclusion and economic participation."

And Ralph believes the Presidents' Council has done just that. He cites Mal Mixon and Steve Williams, among many others, as visionary leaders in this process, by creating a capital formation group with over $20 million allocated for small and minority businesses to get venture capital funding. "That didn't exist in any kind of successful or significant way before." This set an important precedent of trust that now exemplifies the organization. "It's like playing on a football team or soccer team, working together to achieve a goal, not only in practice, but when you're called upon during game time to give an extra 10 or 20 percent and you've got a sprained ankle.  You find more in common with someone than you do differences."

Given his penchant for sports analogies, Ralph's concept of teamwork is no surprise.  The greatest teams have a tradition and culture of excellence that dates back generations, just like Ralph's family.  But Ralph understands that he has an obligation to build on that legacy and give back to the next generation. "We need to appreciate and recognize our local talent, demonstrate that we are both inclusive in terms of development and that we're going to provide the capital in order for this development. We need an even more inspired group of people to back and support both the Presidents' Council and the Jumpstart Program in order to prepare the next generation and workforce." Through his work in the community and The President's Council, Ralph Tyler has continued the legacy of excellence established in his family and proven himself an inspiration to the next generation of African-American entrepreneurs.
