Outdoor Adventure

Imagine floating through the air in a hot air balloon, drifting at the whim of the early-morning breezes.  There's not a sound to be heard, only the vast expanse of the desert beneath.  At four to five miles per hour, it's slow enough to get a good look at the landscape with its javelina, jackrabbits, bobcats, antelope, mule deer and other wildlife.

Then there's hitting the rubber on single-track trails, mountainMen Hiking biking at brake-neck speed through rolling terrain, arroyos, winding creeks and massive rock formations.  Or coasting along in a jeep, a Hummer or an ATV-or perhaps on horseback or foot, taking a deep breath of pleasure.

GolfWhatever the speed or sport, Sedona is an outdoor paradise for nature lovers. With its mild, four-season climate, bright clear skies (and starlit nights), hundreds of trails for hiking and biking, world-class golf, tennis, and aerial adventures in planes, helicopters and balloons, it's easy to see why nature enthusiasts return to Sedona again and again.

Bike MS:  Ride The Vortex - Sedona Verde Valley

April 14 & 15

More than one thousand cyclists from across the country are gearing up for the new Bike MS Arizona ride that's taking place April 14 & 15. The Arizona Chapter hopes to raise over $500,000 to support research and local programs for more than 8,000 Arizonans living with multiple sclerosis (MS). Participants will receive a great value, as the fees for Bike MS are minimal. Registration is only $50 through February 29, a savings of $25! This fee pays for your full weekend and includes: five full meals, full support on the route, frequent complimentary rest stops, and more! There is also a minimum fund-raising requirement of $250. This minimum helps the Arizona Chapter continue its mission of finding a cure for MS.

The new route takes participants through Cottonwood, Camp Verde, Clarkdale, and Sedona, exploring a few wineries in Verde Valley along the way. Another new feature to the ride this year will be the expo on Friday and Saturday night of the event at the campsite located at the Verde valley Fairgrounds in Cottonwood, AZ.

On day one, cyclists have their choice of a 45-mile route, a 65-mile route, or 100-mile route; while on day two, a 30-mile route or 50-mile route will be available.

Myrna Harrison...From East to West...Fifty Plus Years

Reception Friday, March 2 - James Ratliff Gallery

A Californian by birth, Myrna Harrison, as a very young artist, studied painting with icons Hans Hofmann, Jack Tworkov and Morris Davidson in New York and Provincetown when barely out of her teens.

Harrison moved to Arizona more than 30 years ago and since then has primarily painted the Sonoran desert. Harrison says the "the driving force behind my paintings is my desire to capture the emotional intensity and spatial relationships of my subject, so that the viewer feels and sees what I have felt and seen."

"My work was influenced early by abstract expressionist painters like Hans Hofmann, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline and still later by Japanese prints and Chinese landscape painting, particularly their use of line. "In recent years I have been influenced by the Chinese aesthetic of the singular importance of the ink brush stroke for creating the basic form, subject and emotion of the painting," states Harrison. Her love of inks was also very influenced by her father, a cartoonist in Hollywood and New York, who let a young Harrison into his studios where, as an "inker" she would ink the outside of his drawings onto celluloid.

Myrna Harrison was recognized by the Hans Hofmann Institute in NY, and an exhibit at the James Ratliff Gallery was documented by a film crew from the Hofmann Institute. This production and the website that was established showcase Hofmann's most prominent students and their influence on American art.

James Ratliff Gallery cordially invites the public to meet Myrna Harrison on Friday, March 2nd from 5-8 P.M. in their Hillside, Sedona gallery. There will be a short talk at 6 PM.

Lanning Gallery Presents "Ikeda: Idiosyncrasy"

Opening Reception March 2

Lanning Gallery puts a spotlight on the work of artist Homare Ikeda in March. A new exhibition of his work begins with an opening reception from 5-8 pm, during Sedona's "1st Friday Gallery Tour" on March 2. Ikeda, who now lives and teaches in the United States, in addition to continuing his success as a fine artist, was born on a tiny island off the coast of Japan. It is evident in Ikeda's work that growing up surrounded by water, coral reefs, and the island's associated life forms, greatly influenced how the artist interprets his artistic vision. Often linked to classic Abstract Expressionism as well as the later Neo-Expressionism, Ikeda's canvases of sensitive lines and seed-like forms embody a playfulness that creates immediate accessibility. For further information, visit the gallery at Hozho in the heart of Sedona's Gallery District or contact: www.LanningGallery.com, 928-282-6865.
