HEAD OF SCHOOL'S MESSAGE
A wonderful way to celebrate Sukkot

Dear VTT Community,

Last night over 250 parents and VTT students came together to join us for a BBQ dinner under the VTT sukkah. Thanks to the generosity of the Neuman family several years ago, we are able to host so many people in our sukkah every year, and allows us to fulfill the mitzvah of leshev b'sukkah for our students.

sukkah dinner
The evening was the result of hard work on the part of so many. Here, in no particular order, are those responsible for the success of our 2nd Annual Sukkah Dinner: Dale Porte, Alexa Perlmutter, Lauren Kahn and her Jewcy Cuisine crew, Fred Cohen, Myriam & Mason Freedman, The Maple Grill, Shana Hochfelder of Vancouver Umbrella, Or Atid/Or Hadash Israeli dancers, Justine Balin, Eli Friedland, A&B Rentals, Sydney Antao and his dedicated custodial team, and the many parent volunteers who spent hours decorating our sukkah. Todah Rabah to everyone!

WEEKLY TORAH PORTION WITH RABBI BELLAS

Shabbat Hol Hamo'ed Sukkot

A Time for Perspective

rabbi bellas

On the Shabbat that falls in the middle of Sukkot, synagogues around the Jewish world traditionally chant the Scroll of Ecclesiastes/Megillat Qohelet.  Given that what will be read from the Torah on Shabbat morning is an excerpt from parashat Ki Tissa, which we will explore together later this year, we will take this week to focus on the themes and ideas of this scroll from the Writings/K'tuvim section of the Bible, which we read only this one time in the Jewish year.

The band called The Byrds made famous some of the verses from the Scroll of Ecclesiastes, which is a very odd textual selection for the holiday of Sukkot, which is also known as "The time of our joy." The table below includes both the biblical original and the adaptation by the Byrds.

SCHOOL NEWS

terry fox run
Although we broke records for the driest September since 1906, we were not so lucky the afternoon of our annual Terry Fox run. Precisely when the run started, the rain came pouring down (and ironically stopped at the run's conclusion). To see the fun photos of our children enjoying (yes, enjoying!) the rain and the run,

simhat 12
Preschool 4 student brought their homemade flags (degel) and Torahs to the school shul to celebrate the imminent arrival of Simhat Torah.

P4 hebrew
This Preschool 4 student painstakingly sat for 20 minutes replicating the Hebrew letters her teacher wrote--all using a quill and ink!
