WEEKLY TORAH PORTION WITH RABBI BELLAS
Shabbat Parashat Vayeilekh/Shabbat Shuva
A Tz'dakah Tradition for Yom Kippur
This week is a special Shabbat. It is our Shabbat that falls between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Our tradition calls it "Shabbat Shuva," "The Shabbat of Repentance," as it occurs during the Aseret Y'mei T'Shuva, theTen Days of Repentance. In the liturgy of the High Holy Days, we read that there are three actions that bring us to a resolution of our overall process of repentance and introspection during this Holy Day season: T'shuva/Repentance (making apologies and resolving not to repeat our previous missteps), T'filah/Prayer, and Tz'dakah/Charitable giving. I would like to draw special attention to the third of these in my message this week.
Having grown up in Vancouver, I have many strong memories that bubble to the surface of my consciousness whenever the Jewish festivals, especially the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, roll around. In the years after my Bar Mitzvah, I remember leaving my house across the street from Douglas Park early in the morning on Yom Kippur to make the trek uphill to the JCC, where my family always davened. It was the old building back then, still with an entrance off of 41st Avenue. Looking down into the gym through the glass windows, I can still see the baskets of plants sitting as decoration in the basketball rims and the red carpeting adorning the gym floor. To enter the gym, we even got to walk down the set of stairs that could not be used as an entry on normal business days. I would look out at the hundreds of people who were there with me, amazed at the size of the crowd in my younger years. Perhaps the most vivid memory that has stayed with me, however, is what the community had placed at the top of the stairs from before Kol Nidre until the end of Yom Kippur: a metallic shopping cart to be filled with non-perishable food items for the Jewish Food Bank.

I wish you all a G'mar Hatimah Tova/May you be sealed for goodness in the coming year of 5773, an easy fast on Yom Kippur and a Shabbat Shalom!

CHECK OUT ALL OUR LUNCH TIME MUSIC PROGRAMS with Music Specialist, Jennifer Chobotiuk
Glee Club This year we are going to begin the year with students in grades 2-7. It has been my experience that students in Grade 1 are not quite ready to take on such a demanding extra-curricular activity. It can be very difficult for such young students to commit to and remember to come to all rehearsals, as well as to actively participate through the entire 40 minute practice. We do not want to completely exclude our Grade 1 students. We will invite them to join the Glee Club during the 3rd term and sing with us at the Spring Concert. This will give the students a chance to try Glee Club with a limited commitment
Glee Club will meet in room 306 every Monday. Students in Grades 2 and 3 will eat in the lunch room from 11:25 - 11:43. Students in Grades 4-7 will bring their lunch to room 306 and eat from 11:25 - 11:43 under my supervision. All students will rehearse from 11:43 - 12:20.
Show Choir
Show Choir is a student led group open to members of the Glee Club in grades 4-7. It is an opportunity for students to transfer the vocal skills they practice in the Glee Club to pop music songs. Students will participate as a team to plan and prepare songs and choreography.
Show Choir will meet in room 306 every Tuesday from 11:25 - 12:01. Students will eat in the lunch room from 12:01 - 12:20 with the grades 6 & 7 students.
Instrument Club
The Instrument Club provides an opportunity for students in grades 4 - 7 to play more challenging music on classroom instruments. These includes recorders, Orff xylophones, African-style drums, and various percussion instruments. I am open to using other instruments depending on availability and student ability.
The Instrument Club will meet in room 306 every Wednesday from 11:25 - 12:01. Students will eat in the lunch room from 12:01 - 12:20 with the grades 6 & 7 students.

Rabbi Bellas blows the shofar to commemorate the event. For those students enrolled in Thomas Watchorn's after school art class in October, here is a link to his updated web site. Though Thom is now at KDHS, we are thrilled he's still offering programs to VTT students. |
