MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Wishing Everyone a Shana Tova

Dear VTT Community,

As we prepare to welcome the Jewish New Year of 5773, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members and stakeholders of the VTT community a Shana Tova U'Metuka. As Head of School, I am very fortunate to have so much support from so many people--be they faculty, staff, administration, Board members, parents and volunteers. Talmud Torah, in many ways, is the heart of Jewish Vancouver. This is where the future leadership of our community will likely be cultivated and its future direction determined. Through the profound lessons of Judaism, our students gain a solid grounding in--and understanding of--their roles and responsibilities to themselves, their families, their community and the world at large. Rosh Hashanah is our opportunity to not only reflect on these sacred obligations, but to push ourselves to aim higher and do better. This is a message widely disseminated to our students during the days of awe, and throughout the school year.

Please download Rabbi Bellas's Guide to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippour here. Including blessings (with translations and transliterations) and explanations, it contains all you need to know to celebrate this most meaningful of holidays with your family.

Shabbat Shalom and Shana Tova U'Metuka!

Shabbat Parashat Nitzavim/Approaching Rosh Hashana

"Think Higher and Feel Deeper"

rabbi bellas

This past week, the Vancouver Jewish community had the privilege of welcoming Professor Elie Wiesel into our midst as the keynote speaker for the launch of Jewish Federation's Annual Campaign. I personally considered the event a once in a lifetime opportunity and was not disappointed. In his last question to Prof. Wiesel, Dr. Robert Krell asked what message he would convey to the many young people who were in attendance. Prof. Wiesel shared an amazing kernel not just for young people, but for us all: "Think Higher and Feel Deeper." To be able to raise the level of our thinking both on cognitive and social levels and be able to open ourselves to feeling love, compassion and other emotions more deeply are goals which we can all strive to achieve. As we go into the High Holy Days next week on Sunday evening and through Yom Kippur, what an amazing mantra to use as motivation and inspiration for our process of t'shuva/introspection and repentance. I am so grateful for having had the opportunity to hear Prof. Elie Wiesel speak. To have been given the gift of such a powerful message, particularly at this time of the Jewish year, made the experience all the more special. May we all open ourselves to the possibility to "Think Higher and Feel Deeper."

Shabbat Shalom and Shana Tova uM'tukah/A Sweet and Good New Year!

HAVE YOU ALREADY EARNED SOME PPP HOURS???

Don't forget to record them on our online spreadsheet. You can access it here

Remember: every family is obligated to complete 12 hours of volunteer work for the school (or risk forfeiting your $300 PPP deposit). Parents, grandparents, relatives and nannies can fulfill this duty. It is every family's responsibility to record their hours. Neither the school nor the PPP tracks people's volunteer contributions to the school.

The best way to keep track is to immediately record on the online spreadsheet.

NUTRITION IN THE SCHOOL

In an effort to promote a more nutritious school setting, VTT has discontinued the practice of cupcake/treat distribution for birthdays in Grades 1-7.

The school has also assembled a nutrition task force, comprised of health and diet professionals from our parent body, to compile ways to help parents identify and implement healthier food choices for their children. Stay tuned for the task force's suggestions...

Kudos to Geoffery Kehrig for his fantastic leadership on the 2011-12 VTT Yearbook. For two years in a row, Geoffery's vision and creativity have resulted in a stunning portrayal of the school year in review. Don't forget to pick up your pre-ordered copies from the communications office.

Thanks to the new multipurpose room, Ms. Morrell's and Ms. Perkin's Grade 4 students gathered in the work room to explore the differences between local, provincial, national and international news for their unit on current events.

Preschool 4 students enjoy their first learning commons visit of the year with our new Judaics library, Michal Sitbon.

shofar
Our Grade 5 students participated in our Annual Shofar Making Workshop earlier this week under the capable direction of Rabbi Baitelman of Chabad Richmond. Despite the unfamiliar odor of rams horns, the students had a blast (no pun intended) trying to blow their shofar.
See all the photos here.

waste
Jewcy Cuisine is trying hard to source reasonably priced biodegradable containers. In the meantime, our students are doing their part to reduce the waste we send to the dump. By cleaning out their styrofoam containers and stacking them, we've gone from SIX bags to HALF a garbage bag every lunch. Kol Ha'Kavod VTT!
