HEAD OF SCHOOL'S MESSAGE
Blessed to have so many friends...

Dear VTT Community,

As I reported in my column last week, VTT is blessed to have such a broad base of support within our community and beyond. On Sunday, the sold-out Friends of Talmud Torah Gentlemen's Dinner, featuring special guests Gene and Nick Simmons raised over $150,000 in net proceeds for our school. Nearly 30 volunteers, led by dinner Co-Chairs Allen Gaerber and Rob Hector, as well as Tickets Sales Co-Chairs Jeremiah Katz and Rob Greenwald, dedicated countless hours to make this event possible and successful.

KISS Lead Singer and reality TV star Gene Simmons and his son Nick Simmons made an appearance at Sunday night's Gent's Dinner.
Similarly, on June 5th, "Together" Cookbook Co-Chairs Carla van Messel and Stacey Kape hosted a celebration of the project. Hosted at the home of Carla van Messel and Ari Shiff, many contributors to the cookbook brought homemade recipes which were sampled and enjoyed by all. In addition to raising funds for VTT, this project strengthened the bonds of our community by bringing together several generations in a world-class legacy project.

We are grateful for the support of our entire community, but a special Todah Rabah and Mazal Tov to these two projects and the host of volunteers who made them both so successful.

Shabbat Shalom,

Moses' Humble Leadership, not by Authority

banner_11-12

One of the more poignant descriptive texts of the Torah appears in this week's parasha regarding Moses: "The man Moses was very humble, more so than any other human being on the face of the earth." In response to Aaron and Miriam's gossiping about their younger brother, God chastised them for acting against him in such a way with the response quoted above. God makes a point to recognize that humility is a characteristic of the genuine leader, while gossip and slander are acts of hubris in an effort to make one's self look better in comparison to the other. Even Moses, arguably the most powerful and influential figure in all of Israelite and Jewish history did not allow himself to get overcome with a sense of power and control over others. Instead, he wielded power over himself and his actions, putting the needs of God, other individuals, and the entire people of Israel first. In short he led with humble service, not authority.

It is fascinating that experts in leadership theory are now promoting the idea of leadership through service when Moses set this example approximately 2800 years ago. Authoritarian leadership is understood to be able to help one succeed up to a certain point, but if a leader relies on control and giving orders alone, "followers" do not become invested in and inspired about the goals of the institution or organization.

INVITATION TO JOIN VANCOUVER TALMUD TORAH'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND COMMITTEES

Each year, VTT parents and members of our community join our school's faculty and administration to support and participate in an incredibly important shared mission: to deliver the best quality education possible to our children.

Many individuals spend years, and countless hours, devoting their time, energy and love to this mission, and the results are evident everywhere you look. We continue to expand and evolve and, as always, we need your help and support to do so.

Much of the work occurs within committees consisting of faculty, administration, directors and volunteers. These committees perform work that often has deep, profound and impactful results.

At this time, we are seeking volunteers that are prepared to assist on the following committees:

-    Strategic Development
-    Finance
-    Human Resources
-    Communications
-    Strategic Planning
-    Governance
-    Community
-    Technology
-    Campaign Organizing Committee

We are also reviewing nominations for our Board of Directors for the 2012-2013 school year, as well as future years.

If you're ready to get involved and help make a difference, please email Mr. Bill Schonbrun from the Nominations Committee of our Board of Directors at bschonbrun@me.com and indicate your areas of interest and background by June 29th.

Local, national and international agencies received over $19,000 from our Grade 7 students at Tuesday's Ceremony of Giving, the culmination of the Mitzvah of Valuing Philanthropy Program. Allocations ranged from $375 to $800, making a real impact on some agencies' bottom line. The donations will provide a meal to 100 residents on the downtown eastside, build a water well in Africa, provide for the basic needs of a bustling Cambodian orphanage and purchase an oxygen tank that should last 10 years for Magen David Adom.
