REMEMBERING DANI MOSES, z"l The Vancouver Talmud Torah community mourns the loss of Dani Moses, z"l, a past VTT parent who for 12 years actively and enthusiastically contributed to school life and ruach as dedicated mother to Zavi and Joelle. Dani established close friendships with many parents, faculty and staff through her warm demeanor and positive attitude. Exceptionally kind and genuinely sincere, Dani led a life of example by never turning down an opportunity to give, to help and to embrace Jewish values. We extend our deepest condolences to her husband Phil, an educator and past VTT Board member, to Zavi and Joelle, and to the hundreds of relatives and friends mourning her loss around the world. May her memory be for a blessing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please join Dani's family for any of three shiva gatherings:
Saturday, May 5, 9:00 pm, Havdalah (Shabbat ends 9:17 pm)
Sunday, May 6, 7:00 pm, Mincha service
Monday, May 7, 7:00 pm, Mincha service
Gatherings will be at the home of Yael and Jeremy Horwitz, 2229 W 36th Avenue in Kerrisdale (near Arbutus, between Balsam & Vine).

WEEKLY TORAH PORTION/PARASHAT HA'SHAVUAH by Rabbi Matthew Bellas
Shabbat Parashat Aharei Mot-K'doshim
Setting the Example for the World
There is a great deal of debate both in the traditional Jewish literature and in the modern period about the meaning of the Jewish people being told that it is and should be an "or la'goyim/light unto the nations." Some commentators believe that it is a statement describing the Children of Israel as "better" than all the other nations of the world, while yet others - perhaps recognizing the risk of making such a statement - claimed instead that God was commanding the people to hold themselves to a higher standard and to set an example of virtuosity that the rest of the world could follow. In the end, the debate continues to rage on. However, given the subject matter of this week's double parasha, it is a very relevant topic because God singles out the Israelites by telling them that they are to be "holy because I, the Lord your God am holy."
What it means to be holy is also an amorphous idea. There are several definitions of the word holy, but in the biblical context, it most often means "different" or "separate." Read more online...
Shabbat Shalom!

SCHOOL NEWS
Some artwork to put a smile on your face! 3A and 3B were treated to a dizzying array of engaging mathematical puzzles to solve by UBC Professor Jonathan Berkowitz. His mission? To get students to "flip problems, turn them sideways and on their heads" as the answer is sometimes so obvious that one easily misses it. Beware! Your kids just might test your logic!
Our Grade 6 & 7 girls volleyball team had their first game against Action Volleyball from Burnaby. Thankfully, the coach and competition were generous in support of our amateur team. A big todah rabah to Sylvester Noel for arranging this opportunity. Yishar Ko'ach to music specialist Jennifer Chobotiuk and her junior and senior Glee Club members for their bronze place finish at the Kiwanis Music Festival earlier this week. Photo courtesy of Michelle Gerber.
Who knew math could be so much fun? Some of Ms. Leisen's math students retreated to a preschool classroom to collaboratively solve some math problems. No sense in not enjoying the process!
Morah Ellen's K3 students took their assignment of constructing caterpillar cocoons very seriously. Stay tuned for photos of their butterfly release in a couple of weeks. |

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of Strathcona Chair Lisa Boroditsky, we sold 90 earthquake kits! Todah Rabah to those families who purchased a survival kit.
Kudos, as well, to Valerie Grubner, a seventh grade parent who has been leading the Grade 2 Torah cover project for Morah Judith for the last five years. It's been wonderful to have someone so knowledgeable in charge! Jazmin Sasky, artist and parent, has also supported the Torah celebration for many years. She deserves credit for the gorgeous certificates she's created for the occasion.
Everyone is chipping in to make the May 16th Campaign Kick-off event a success! Thank you to those Grade 6 & 7 students who are volunteering to provide childcare to parents wishing to attend the gathering.
Way to go, Eden! This seventh grade student took the initiative to do her own fundraising for our Mitzvah of Valuing Philanthropy program and has raised $751.00 to date, far exceeding the hoped for $250 per student amount. Kol Ha'Kavod!
