RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS WEEK 2012 February 20-24
Last year, in conjunction with KDHS, VTT launched and participated in a new program: RAC Week. Each day of the week, a team of our Grade 7 students leads the school and invites students to perform random acts of kindness for themselves, each other, the earth, and the wider community. Here is the schedule for the week:
MONDAY: kindness for the self: do things that are kindnesses/indulgences for you.
TUESDAY: kindness for friends and family: this is a real opportunity for spreading kindness around the school. We are also going to be collecting toiletries for the Jewish Family Service Agency.
WEDNESDAY: kindness for the community: spreading kindness for the greater Jewish and Vancouver community. We will be collecting blankets for the homeless on this day.
THURSDAY: kindness for the Earth: environmental concerns will be on our minds for this day and discussions will occur on how we can better care for our planet.
FRIDAY: Wrap-Up and Pennies for Patients fundraiser to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada will be managed by three third graders: Alex Rubin-Sarganis, Jack Tritt & Nava Wolfish. Pennies and all other coin denominations welcome!

Parashat Ha'Shavuah/Weekly Torah Portion with Rabbi Matthew Bellas
Shabbat Parashat Mishpatim/Shabbat M'varkhim
"Give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach him to fish and he can eat for the rest of his life."
Whenever I think about the difference between tz'dakah/ charity and hesed/acts of loving-kindness, I am reminded of this famous quotation. In Jewish tradition, tz'dakah and hesed have developed two quite different definitions. Tz'dakah is the giving of money, while hesed is the giving of time, effort, and a commitment to compassionate and loving support. In the Torah, however, as we learn in this week's parasha/Torah portion, tz'dakah and hesed are actually intertwined. When the Torah commands the Israelites and their descendents to help the poor, it does not talk about donating spare change. First, it commands us to provide substantial enough monetary loans that the individual will be able to get back onto his or her own two feet and, second, requires that such loans to fellow Israelites/Jews be interest free. The intention of this system is to provide those members of our community who are in need with both the financial support necessary to acquire basic needs and, perhaps, invest in starting a business or other form of employment and the emotional support to feel independent and have a rehabilitated self-esteem. So you see, the Torah combines both tz'dakah and hesed into one integrated support system.
This practice of support within the Jewish community has lasted from the time of the Torah until this very day. In times when Jews in need had nowhere else to turn, both individuals and agencies within the community existed in order to provide interest-free loans. In Jewish communities around the world today, including in Vancouver, the Hebrew Free Loan Association embodies and makes manifest what the Torah expects from us in terms of providing financial support to Jews in need. If you or someone you know is looking for a new or additional way to make your tz'dakah money count, the Hebrew Free Loan Association is one agency that brings tz'dakah back to its original roots in the Torah. Our community must be thankful for the existence of H.F.L.A. and do everything that it can to support its important mission.
Shabbat Shalom!

This past Tuesday evening, more than 60 VTT students from grades 4-7 participated in Jewish Federation's 24th Annual Public Speaking Contest. SCHOOL NEWS

Grade 4 students spent the day at Grouse Mountain to complement their social studies unit on First Nations. Students commented that the art work was fun, but the snowshoeing was tough! Yes, that's Shlomo, our bus driver and zayde to every VTT student, enjoying snowtubing with our third graders earlier in the week. Schlepping our students up to Cypress Mountain does have its perks!
Grade 7 students focus on a writing assignment in their Humanities class. Our one-to-one Mac laptop program for seventh graders was implemented last year. In conjunction with the opening of the Chutzpah Festival, VTT welcomed musician Lenka Lichtenberg to provide workshops in Yiddish and Ashkenazi music to Grade 6 classes last Monday. Lenka shared both traditional and some of her own music compositions with the students to enhance their Jewish cultural education. We are grateful to the Diamond Foundation for supporting this program.
Every year Grade 1 teacher Morah Anna, with the help of parents, teaches her students how to make paper. In the photo above, students strain the pulp through a homemade sieve. The new Hillcrest arena is a great place for skating. Second grade students had a blast on the ice. Teachers were surprised to see so many competent skaters due to the preponderance of (mainly) boys who play ice hockey. |
