MACCAGLEE CONCERT TIX HAVE BEEN SENT HOME! ASK YOUR YOUNGEST CHILD!

HEAD OF SCHOOL'S MESSAGE
What is Strathcona?
Dear VTT Community,
Usually around January, Talmud Torah families begin to hear a lot of talk about "Strathcona," especially in terms of services and sales to support the program. For those new to our school, Strathcona is a week-long outdoor education program that our seventh grade graduates have been participating in for over 30 years! It is also a final bonding experience as the students make way for high school.
Students going to Strathcona challenge themselves, work alone and in groups and set and achieve goals. Students experience new personal insights and greater self-esteem.
Due to the high cost of transport and kosher food, families must raise significant sums to send their children to this unforgettable program. Starting in January, you will learn more about the fundraising initiatives the grade has planned, but at least one of the fundraisers, Wealthy School Revolution, has already started and everyone in our community and beyond is welcome to participate!
The Wealthy School Revolution is a unique concept that aims to ease the pressure of fundraising for schools and parents alike. It is a simple online grocery business that supplies over 2000 organic and natural products, such as Annie's Mac & Cheese, Nature's Path cereals and Quaker snack bars. It also sells household paper and cleaning products and school supplies. For every order that is placed VTT will receive up to 20%.
Once you have registered (a simple process that takes 2-minutes to complete) and completed a shop, your groceries get delivered to VTT (twice a month) for you to pick up. It's as simple as that!
Vancouver Talmud Torah is already registered to benefit from people's orders (and the program is not restricted to VTT families so tell your friends). VTT parent Natasha Greensite is happy to answer all of your questions. Happy ordering!
Also on the agenda for the new year: EARTHQUAKE KITS (for your car and home) and our Annual Community BINGO & Bagels Evening.
Thanks for your support!

Parashat Ha'Shavuah/Weekly Torah Portion with Rabbi Matthew Bellas
Shabbat Parashat VaYeitzei
What Goes Around Comes Around
In last week's parasha, we became reacquainted with the story of Rivka and Yaakov's usurpation of Eisav's firstborn blessing. Mother and son conspired to trick Yitzhak into giving his blessing to the younger of his two twin sons, Yaakov. After having succeeded in this coup, Yaakov "runs away from home" to escape the murderous and vengeful wrath of his older brother - who had sworn to kill him for what he had done - at the behest of his now terrified mother. Rivka instructs Yaakov to flee to Haran, the home of her older brother Lavan, who we first met when Avraham's servant Eliezer went searching for a wife for Yitzhak. All these years later, Lavan has a home, flocks and family of his own - including two daughters named Leah and Rahel.
Yaakov arrives in Haran and almost immediately encounters his cousin Rahel at the communal well (recall this literary motif from two weeks ago) with Lavan's flocks. Yaakov heroically rolls the well stone off the well by himself, waters Lavan's flocks and then embraces and kisses Rahel, breaking into tears. Rahel runs back home and returns with Lavan, who greets Yaakov and invites him home. After living with and working for Lavan for one month, Lavan asks him what he desires in exchange for his labor. Yaakov asks for Rahel's hand in marriage. Lavan stipulates that Yaakov will need to work for seven years in order to "earn" Rahel's hand and Yaakov takes the deal. At the end of the seven years, Yaakov comes to ask Lavan for Rahel and a wedding ensues, only the bride was LEAH...Yaakov had been fooled! He agreed to work yet another seven years in order to have Rahel as his wife as well. Read more online...
Shabbat Shalom!
