CITYTV'S BREAKFAST TELEVISION TO BROADCAST FROM VANCOUVER TALMUD TORAH! (WEDNESDAY, MAR 16, 6-9 A.M.)
Dear VTT Community,
Turn your televisions to Citytv this coming Wednesday morning, March 16th, from 6 a.m. - 9 a.m. for Breakfast Television's LIVE broadcast from Vancouver Talmud Torah. We are the lucky recipients of a $1000 cash gift from the station, and will collectively receive the cheque during the show's final segment at 8:25 a.m. It would be wonderful to gather as many students, faculty and staff in the big gym in advance of the presentation. To that end, we are requesting that parents drop off their children by 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday to allow everyone adequate time to gather in the gym for the final goodbye from VTT. Other segments will feature a Fiddler rehearsal and hamantaschen baking with parent Hilit Nurick of the Dizzy Whisk.
We look forward to showcasing VTT's wonderful spirit and community to viewers across the Lower Mainland. Please help us by getting your children to school by 8:15 a.m. for the final broadcast.
Questions? Contact Jennifer for more details.
Shabbat Shalom,
Cathy Lowenstein, M.Ed.

Parashat Ha'Shavuah/Weekly Torah Portion with Rabbi Matthew Bellas
Shabbat Parashat Vayikra Making "Offerings" at Purim Time
This week's parasha is among the harder weekly Torah portions to read from cover to cover. It contains the details and practices for the various different sacrifices that were to be offered first in the Mishkan/portable desert Tabernacle and then later in the Temple in Jerusalem. The sacrificial system is a relic of our ancient past, which to us, serves as the foundation for our current structure and themes for daily prayer. These are the historical contributions which this now very distant system for communication with God provide. However, digging a little bit deeper, the sacrificial program reveals the value and requirement of making a personal offering or sacrifice in order to achieve higher spiritual fulfillment, which is difficult to capture in what is the routine of daily prayer. In ancient times, the personal communicative bridge to God was built through the very physical process of bringing a live animal to the Temple Mount. The effort that this act required "took something out of you." Physical exertion was necessary in order to achieve a spiritual end. In addition, this animal that was being brought was either one from your own personal flocks or one that you purchased upon arrival to Jerusalem. Either way, the animal was of financial value, and handing it over the Kohanim/Temple Priests represented a monetary sacrifice in addition to the physical labor that you either had or would exert getting the animal to the Temple. Thus, the word "sacrifice" is a very literal representation of what the ancient offerings to God, in fact, really were. Read more online... Shabbat Shalom! Rabbi Matthew Bellas |

ARE YOU PREPARED?
(Editor's note: This message was prepared prior to the horrific earthquake shattering much of Japan's northern coast)
Four days after the devastating earthquake hit Christchurch, New Zealand, the following was reported by the New Zealand Herald: · 40% of the city was without power; · 80% of the city was without water supply; · Boil water advisories were in effect; · Residents were asked to collect water if it rained; · Residents were asked not to flush their toilets to avoid contaminating the remaining water supply; · Sewage was becoming a growing concern. Remember, you and your family need to be prepared to be self sufficient for a minimum of 72 hours after an earthquake. Every family should have: · Family Emergency Plan · Emergency Supplies lists · Emergency Preparedness for Your Pets (City of Vancouver) Visit the Government of Canada's GET PREPARED website to start making your family emergency plan. Collect emergency supplies from around your home. For example, take an old gym bag or backpack and collect the follwing items: an old pair of sturdy shoes, rolls of toilet paper, a spare can opener, etc. Remember that you need shoes, clothing and supplies for each member of your family for 72 hours. Emergency kits are also available for purchase from a number of retailers.
