PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear VTT Community,

Re-enrollment packages for the 2011-12 school year have been sent by post to all families. Once again, I would like to repeat my message from previous newsletters that VTT understands that paying full tuition may present difficulties for some of our families. Our mission is to deliver a high quality secular and Judaic education regardless of one's ability to pay. Our Tuition Assistance Committee (TAC) is there for those families who are in need. Applications are treated discreetly and confidentially by the committee--all of whose members remain anonymous to the school. Should your family be in a position to receive support, I urge you to submit an application to TAC. Details of the criteria for TAC and how to apply are in the application package or can be downloaded from our website here

Vancouver Talmud Torah values each and every family attending our school-and would be remiss to lose anyone due to financial hardship.

Shabbat Shalom,

"The Gift of Israel"

rabbi bellas

As I sit down to write this week's d'var Torah, I am reflecting on just how fortunate we are to be living in a country like Canada, where democracy is legitimate, systematic, and creates a society where even though we are not always happy with decisions that are made or current societal conditions, we have the ability freely and openly to express ourselves through the democratic process.  On the other side of the world, countries like ours are in the great minority.  Following the news from Egypt is both heart-wrenching and greatly anxiety-provoking.  While I am very concerned for the implications of the outcome of events there for Israel, I am also inspired to be even more appreciative of the miraculous way that Israel has been able to establish itself as a country based on democracy when its surroundings are the complete opposite.  A democratic Jewish state in Israel is not only a gift for the Jewish people, but also a light to the rest of the Middle East region and world.

In this week's parasha, God and Moses begin to lay out the instructions for the building of the mishkan, the portable desert Tabernacle.  Standing at the foot of Mount Sinai, the people are still "homeless," with only the promise of the future possession of the land of the forefathers.  They are living in sukkot/temporary huts, which do provide shelter, but cannot be called "home."

SEX TALK? NO SWEAT!

A WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS (K-7)

VANCOUVER TALMUD TORAH IS PLEASED TO PRESENT A PARENT INFORMATION EVENING WITH

SALEEMA NOON, Sexual Health Educator

Monday, Feb 7, 6:00 p.m.

FREE, but RSVP mandatory: info@talmudtorah.com

Not all parents are comfortable talking to their children about sex, but all parents can learn to be comfortable. During this open and informational session, parents will come to terms with sexual health, and understand how it fits into the lives of their children at this stage of life.

Attendees will discover how to easily overcome embarrassment when talking about sexual health, learn words and concepts that are easy to use, and leave well equipped to clearly answer the questions children ask. The workshop is light hearted, but delivers straight and current facts on how parents and children can work together to promote good sexual decisions for a lifetime.
